Quang Tri province, with its special geographical location and heroic history, is home to many important historical relics, including four special national relics. Quang Tri province is currently implementing two key historical relic conservation projects, according to Decision No. 1230/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the Program for Preserving and Promoting the Sustainable Values of Vietnamese Cultural Heritage in the 2021-2030 period.
At the meeting, Mr. Hoang Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province, also made many recommendations to remove difficulties in the work of preserving and promoting the value of historical relics, including requesting the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to soon appraise and submit to the Prime Minister for approval the plan to preserve and restore the special national relic of Quang Tri Citadel and the memorial sites of the 81 days and nights of fighting to protect the Citadel.
With more than 500 historical relics, including 4 special national relics, marking many important historical events of the country. In recent years, Quang Tri province has focused on preserving and promoting the value of these relics, not only to protect cultural heritage but also to develop sustainable tourism, promoting the image of Quang Tri to the world.
Mr. Hoang Nam hopes that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will guide the preparation of a dossier to recognize the Gio An Ancient Water Exploitation System as a special national relic and direct relevant agencies and units to support the consultation process for UNESCO to recognize it as a world cultural heritage.
In addition, according to Mr. Hoang Nam, the Festival for Peace has become a typical tourism product of Quang Tri, attracting a large number of tourists and contributing to raising public awareness of the historical and cultural values of the region. Therefore, Quang Tri province wishes to continue supporting the organization of this festival in 2026 to promote the image of Quang Tri on the domestic and international tourism and cultural map.
Quang Tri province leaders hope that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will pay attention to creating favorable conditions to support the locality in implementing key cultural and historical projects in the area.
Currently, Quang Tri province is implementing two key historical relic conservation projects according to Decision No. 1230/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the Program for Conservation and Sustainable Promotion of Vietnam's Cultural Heritage Values for the 2021-2030 period, including: "Reunification Park at the Hien Luong-Ben Hai Special National Relic Site" and "Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Special National Relic Site and memorial sites of the 81 days and nights of fighting to protect the Citadel". The total investment of both projects is up to 170 billion VND from the central budget.
The Thong Nhat Park project has a total budget of about 80 billion VND, aiming to restore and preserve the relic site, at the same time complete the infrastructure and promote the historical and traditional cultural values, help restore the relic works, create an ecological space combined with tourism and educational activities, contributing to raising public awareness of the historical value of the Hien Luong - Ben Hai area. This project has been approved by the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has appraised the construction drawings. According to the plan, the project will be allocated 80 billion VND in 2025, but the disbursement value to date has only reached more than 700 million VND.

The Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Relic Site Project has a total budget of about 90 billion VND, focusing on preserving and restoring the relic site and connecting it with tourist attractions in the region. The goal of this project is to preserve heritage, develop sustainable tourism and educate patriotic traditions. This project has also been appraised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and at the same time, the technical infrastructure connection is being implemented. This project will be allocated 90 billion VND in 2025, but the current disbursement value has only reached 740 million VND.
According to the leaders of Quang Tri province, the projects encountered many difficulties and problems with procedures related to relic planning, construction and procedures for granting land use right certificates, prolonging the time to complete the documents. The work of approving and adjusting the investment policy also encountered many problems, causing the project to be adjusted twice in 2023 and 2024. In addition, the selection of contractors according to two design steps also encountered many problems, prolonging the project preparation time.

Mr. Nguyen Long Hai, Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee, affirmed that he will give strong direction to overcome the delay and accelerate the progress of key conservation projects in the province. Continue to develop creative cultural spaces, while preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, and expanding tourism space to the West of the province - where there is still much potential for development.
Mr. Nguyen Long Hai also hopes that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will support Quang Tri province in building the National Museum of "Memories of War and Aspiration for Peace", with a total budget of 1,000 billion VND, expected to be implemented in the period of 2026-2030. Speaking at the meeting, Minister Nguyen Van Hung highly appreciated the achievements that Quang Tri has made in the fields of culture and tourism, especially the close combination between tourism development and heritage conservation. Quang Tri has completed the goals according to the Resolution of the 17th Provincial Party Congress, contributing to the socio-economic development of the whole country. The province has also succeeded in developing typical tourism products such as the Festival for Peace and tours of ancient battlefields, thereby promoting the development of the local economy.
However, preparations for the province's key relic conservation projects are currently too slow, so the Minister requested Quang Tri province to urge and monitor the progress of the projects to ensure they start and complete on schedule. Sharing with Quang Tri about the difficulty in finding counterpart funds for projects in the National Target Program for Cultural Development for the 2025-2030 period, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will submit to the Prime Minister for priority support mechanisms, creating maximum conditions for Quang Tri province to complete the projects on schedule.
Regarding the construction of the National Museum "Memories of War and Aspiration for Peace", Minister Nguyen Van Hung requested Quang Tri province to conduct research and implement the project in accordance with the local situation, and change the investment form from public-private partnership to public investment so that the project can be completed and put into operation soon to serve the people, domestic and international tourists when coming to Quang Tri in the near future.
Minister Nguyen Van Hung also suggested that Quang Tri province upgrade the Festival for Peace to a national festival and develop other relic brands, such as Vinh Moc Tunnels and the Gio An Ancient Water Exploitation System.
