Yen exchange rate trend forecast
On the morning of November 8, the Japanese Government and the Bank of Japan intervened in the currency market for two consecutive days, July 11 and 12, by selling USD and buying Yen, with a total value of more than 5.53 billion Yen (equivalent to about 36.8 billion USD).
According to the report of the Japanese Ministry of Finance, both of these interventions were in the form of “secret interventions”, in which the total amount of intervention on July 11 was nearly 3.17 billion Yen, on July 12 was nearly 2.37 billion Yen. The total of both interventions was more than 5.53 billion Yen (equivalent to about 36.8 billion USD).
Japan’s successive interventions in the currency market came shortly after the Yen fell against the USD to its lowest level in 38 years. Earlier in late May, the Japanese Government also confirmed its first intervention worth a total of about 19.3 billion USD – the first currency intervention of this country since October 2022.
According to analysts, Tokyo still has plenty of room to intervene in the currency market, especially if the Yen continues to depreciate further, as the country's foreign exchange reserves reached 1.23 trillion USD as of the end of June.
The sharp depreciation of the Yen could also pose a significant challenge to Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru's administration, especially in the context of the ruling coalition's defeat in Japan's 50th general election held at the end of October.
