According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Geophysics (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), on the afternoon of December 8, an earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province; no human or property damage was caused.
Specifically, the earthquake occurred at 17:19:11 (Hanoi time), with coordinates 14.766 degrees North latitude, 108.304 degrees East longitude, focal depth of about 8.1km; natural disaster risk level 0.
The earthquake in Kon Plong district was identified by scientists of the Institute of Geophysics as a stimulated earthquake, caused by the water accumulation process of the hydroelectric reservoir affecting the active fault system below.
Induced earthquakes have also occurred regularly and continuously since 2021. There are times when earthquakes occur frequently and there are times when they are quieter, closely related to the water storage operation of hydroelectric reservoirs.
Director of the Institute of Geophysics, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, said that the earthquakes in this area have a magnitude of no more than 5.0, and although the earthquakes occur frequently, they are not at a level that warrants a warning. The Institute of Geophysics regularly informs the authorities and people in the area about earthquakes.
Currently, the Institute of Geophysics maintains regular, stable and continuous operations of Vietnam's national network of geophysical observation stations with 40 seismic stations for earthquake monitoring, 4 geomagnetic stations, 7 lightning and atmospheric physics locating stations, 1 crustal deformation monitoring station, and 1 ionoelectric station.
According to Director Nguyen Xuan Anh, with modern equipment and automatic data processing tools, earthquakes can be located within 3-5 minutes after an earthquake occurs./.
