(Dan Tri) - According to the Political Commissar of Military Region 2, only when weather and water flow conditions are technically satisfactory will the engineering force proceed to build a pontoon bridge.
On the afternoon of September 10, dozens of cars carrying pontoon bridges and related equipment were gathered by the 249th River Crossing Engineer Brigade of the Engineering Corps (Ministry of National Defense) at Huong Non commune, Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province. This work is to serve the establishment of a temporary pontoon bridge to replace the newly collapsed Phong Chau bridge with 2 spans. The location of the pontoon bridge is about 300m from Phong Chau bridge. A representative of Brigade 249 said the unit mobilized 198 soldiers and 78 vehicles on the night of September 9 and early morning of September 10. Specifically, Kraz and Ural cars are used to transport pontoon bridges, canoes and safety equipment. Pontoon bridges are stored in metal "barrels".
On this occasion, Brigade 249 brought two types of canoes, a regular canoe (left) and an electromagnetic canoe (right), to carry out the mission. Inspecting and surveying the proposed location for a pontoon bridge across the Red River, Lieutenant General Pham Duc Duyen, Party Secretary and Political Commissar of Military Region 2, Ministry of National Defense, said that the units had done a good job of preparing and conducting the survey. According to the Lieutenant General, when weather and water flow conditions are technically safe, a pontoon bridge will be built to ensure people's travel needs as well as local economic development. The Political Commissar of Military Region 2 assessed that the flood water on the Red River is currently very high and flowing rapidly, so it is not yet possible to decide when to install the pontoon bridge. According to Dan Tri reporters on the afternoon of September 10, the flow of the Red River is still very strong and the water level is high. Therefore, not only has the installation of the pontoon bridge not been carried out, but the search and rescue work for the victims has also encountered many difficulties and obstacles.
Earlier, on the morning of September 9, Phong Chau Bridge (Tam Nong District, Phu Tho) collapsed 2 spans, causing 11 casualties, of which 3 victims were successfully rescued. In addition, 2 tractor-trailers and 6 motorbikes were also damaged. After the incident, Phu Tho provincial authorities banned vehicles from traveling on Trung Ha and Tu My bridges for repairs.
