TPO - The International Youth Mathematics Olympiad was held in India from July 26-30. The Vietnamese delegation won big when 16/17 students participating in the competition won prizes.

The 2024 International Junior Mathematical Olympiad (host country initials X + IMC) is hosted by India and is called InIMC (India + IMC).
This is a very prestigious competition, many winning students continue to participate in IMO competitions at high school level later, with a committee of 10 members from countries running 3 international mathematics competitions X+IMC; IMSO and IMAS cooperate with educational institutions in more than 30 countries to organize X+IMC competitions rotating between countries such as SAIMC 2019 South Africa, IIMC 2021-2022 Indonesia, BIMC 2023 Bulgaria, ....
IMC exam questions are proposed by each country and selected by a panel of experienced international examiners and three host country examiners. In addition, 10-20% of the problems are set by the exam board, so they are very objective.
At Key Stage 2, Year 6 and below, the test consists of 15 written tasks and takes 90 minutes. At Key Stage 3, Year 8 and below, the test consists of 12 written tasks and 3 essay tasks and takes 120 minutes. The team test is a competition between small teams of four students each. They will work together to solve 10 problems in 70 minutes.
This year in India, it was held at CMS (City Montessori School), Gomti Nagar Campus, Lucknow city - the largest inter-level school in the world with more than 62,000 students, with the participation of more than 600 excellent candidates from 30 countries.
Vietnam began participating in the X+IMC competition in 2011. In 2015, the Ministry of Education and Training officially recognized this exam and allowed Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted to form a team representing Vietnam to participate.
In 2021, authorized by the International IMC Organizing Committee, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and the IEG Education Development Fund organized the selection of teams from schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Students selected for the team had to go through two very strict domestic selection rounds with the best candidates, then trained for six weeks to adapt to the competitions.
Candidates will take part in two individual and team tests on July 28, and the award ceremony will take place on the afternoon of July 30, 2024, Indian time.
According to the results from the organizing committee, 16 out of 17 Vietnamese students participating in the competition won individual awards, including 3 gold medals, 6 silver, 6 bronze and 1 consolation prize.
At Key Stage 3, student Nguyen Dang Khanh (Newton Secondary School - High School) won a gold medal. At Key Stage 2, two students won gold medals: Nguyen Phong Chau (Newton Secondary School 5) and Nguyen Duc Minh (Hanoi Amsterdam Secondary School - High School for the Gifted).
Notably, student Nguyen Phong Chau scored 140/150 points, the highest score at the entire Key Stage 2 level, surpassing many candidates in teams with strengths in Math such as the US team with a candidate scoring the highest score of 130 and followed by the Chinese team with a candidate scoring 120 points.
In addition to the individual competition, InIMC has a team competition. The Vietnamese team won 2 championships, 1 first prize and 2 second prizes in this category.
