Nguyen Hoang Minh Quan (a student in class 9A, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students) has just become the top scorer in the 2024 Hanoi entrance exam for 10th grade with a total score of 48.5, including two perfect scores of 10.
Minh Quân impressed many with perfect scores of 10 in both Math and English, and 9.25 in Literature. His total admission score reached 48.5. In addition, Minh Quân scored 8.25 in Math for the specialized Informatics program in the Hanoi entrance exam for specialized high schools, and 7.2 in English. Minh Quân said he was very happy with the results. In fact, after the exam, Quân had a rough idea of his scores, but he didn't expect to become the top scorer.

Speaking to Vietnamnet, Ms. Do Thi Kim Ngan, Minh Quan's mother, said that she was very happy to hear that her son had achieved a high score on the 10th grade entrance exam and become the valedictorian, but she considered it just a normal result. "Honestly, I wasn't too surprised by his scores because after the exam, he had already assessed his own performance. As for becoming the valedictorian or having the highest or second highest score, the family didn't set any goals; we were just happy that he got accepted into his desired school," Ms. Ngan said. Speaking about her son, Ms. Ngan said that Minh Quan is very conscientious, serious, and mature in his thinking. "He is very conscientious about his studies, always completing his assignments thoroughly. Even though he's specializing in Computer Science, Quan doesn't play games," Ms. Ngan said. However, Minh Quan isn't the type of person who likes to study excessively. “Even when it comes to extra specialized subjects, my son doesn't study with too many teachers, but only chooses to study at one place – where he feels comfortable. Instead, he dedicates time to himself to study diligently,” Ms. Ngan shared. However, according to Ms. Ngan, her son learns thoroughly. Quan is enthusiastic about studying, but Ms. Ngan also sets clear rules for him regarding study hours. “Usually, I stipulate that he must stop studying at 11 PM. Maybe for other students, studying until 1 or 2 AM is normal, but I want him to learn how to manage his time scientifically . If he can't organize and manage his tasks throughout the day, he has to accept it. Because I always tell him that maintaining good health is very important. That's why he always makes the most of every moment, tackling tasks as they arise, rather than waiting until the last minute,” Ms. Ngan recounted. Because of this, Minh Quan always has a clear plan. Minh Quân has also achieved many awards and academic accomplishments. In 2021, Minh Quân excelled and won first place in the English Champion 2021 competition. He also achieved the title of outstanding student at the city level in Computer Science. Minh Quân enjoys computer science, programming, and reading. "He often reads books in English and listens to foreign radio," Ms. Ngân shared. Besides studying, to relieve stress, Minh Quân enjoys swimming and has maintained this activity regularly until the day before his entrance exam for 10th grade. "I often encourage him by saying he can reduce his study workload. Just about an hour a day, but in return, he gets exercise and improves his health," Ms. Ngân said.

Ms. Ngan believes that her son's achievement today is very gratifying, but her family considers it only one of the initial steps on his journey, not a monumental accomplishment. "I always tell him that the learning and training journey ahead will be full of difficulties and he needs to continue to strive and be more resilient," Ms. Ngan shared. Before knowing the results of the Hanoi public high school entrance exam, Minh Quan had already received acceptance letters for both the Computer Science and English specialized programs at three specialized high schools: the Computer Science program at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (affiliated with the University of Natural Sciences - VNU Hanoi), the Computer Science program at the High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi Pedagogical University, and the English program at the High School for Gifted Students in Foreign Languages (affiliated with the University of Foreign Languages - VNU Hanoi). Notably, despite not studying extensively for the English specialized exam, Quan was still accepted and awarded a scholarship at the High School for Gifted Students in Foreign Languages. Having become the top scorer in the 2024 Hanoi public high school entrance exam, Minh Quân will certainly be accepted into his first-choice school, Yen Hoa High School. In the coming days, he will wait for the results of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's admission scores for specialized schools/programs before making a final decision on which school to attend. However, Ms. Ngan believes that regardless of the admission results, Minh Quân will most likely choose to study in the Computer Science program at the High School for Gifted Students specializing in Natural Sciences, to fulfill his passion for information technology.Vietnamnet.vn
