After nearly 60 years of work, including more than 13 years as head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always determined that the consistent goal of the Vietnamese revolutionary cause is national independence associated with socialism; thereby contributing to realizing the aspiration of making Vietnam a powerful nation.

In the cause of building socialism in Vietnam, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong always affirmed the fundamental role of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thought, especially emphasizing the scientific and revolutionary nature of Marxism-Leninism and the national character as well as the viewpoint on the role and mission of the people in Ho Chi Minh thought.
Based on the study of scientific theories, first of all Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought, combined with summarizing Vietnam's renovation practices and generalizing new theories, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has outlined the model of socialism in Vietnam. In the article "Some theoretical and practical issues on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam" on the occasion of the 131st anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2021), answering the question "What is socialism?", General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong stated: "Up to now, although there are still a number of issues that need to be further studied, we have formed a general perception: The socialist society that the Vietnamese people are striving to build is a society of rich people, strong country, democracy, fairness, and civilization; owned by the people, with a highly developed economy, based on modern productive forces and advanced, appropriate production relations, with an advanced culture, imbued with national identity; people have a prosperous, free, happy life, with conditions for comprehensive development; ethnic groups in the Vietnamese community are equal, united, respect and help each other to develop together; there is a socialist rule-of-law state of the people, by the people, for the people, led by the Communist Party; there is friendly and cooperative relations with countries in the world".
Also in the above article, not only clearly explaining "what is socialism?", General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also contributed to clarifying a very important theoretical and practical issue in our country today, which is "how will Vietnam move towards socialism?". Accordingly, it is necessary to promote industrialization and modernization of the country in association with the development of a knowledge-based economy; develop a socialist-oriented market economy; actively build an advanced culture imbued with national identity, build people, improve people's lives, implement social progress and justice; firmly ensure national defense and security, social order and safety; firmly implement the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, proactively and actively integrate into the international community; build socialist democracy, promote the will and strength of great national unity, combined with the strength of the times; Building a socialist rule of law state of the people, by the people, for the people; especially attaching importance to the task of building a clean, strong and comprehensive Party and political system.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Dinh Phong (Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics), in terms of practice, the article by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong mentioned three main aspects from the perspective of Vietnam. Accordingly, President Ho Chi Minh and our Party shaped and oriented socialism on the foundation of Marxist-Leninist scientific socialism but starting from Vietnam's reality; respecting and acting according to objective laws. Another point is that the practice of building socialism in the pre-Doi Moi period helped our Party gradually have a more correct, deeper, and more scientific understanding of socialism and the transitional period to socialism. "While there are still some simple notions about socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam, it must be affirmed that our Party and People have made the seemingly impossible possible. That is, building socialism in the North while carrying out the people's national democratic revolution in the South. The value of socialism in the North is the strength and endless inspiration for the people of the South and the people of the whole country to complete the historical task of liberating the South and unifying the country," Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Dinh Phong commented.
Along with that, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Dinh Phong, the most vivid reality is over 35 years of renovation. The article by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong reviewed the situation of Vietnam before the renovation, from being heavily devastated by war, full of difficulties to the process of 35 years of renovation, the country continued to face difficulties in objective and subjective conditions. Facing those challenges, our country still determined that "advancing to socialism is the aspiration of our people, the right choice of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, in line with the development trend of history".
Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Dinh Phong affirmed that through the article of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, our Party clearly identified that Vietnamese socialism has been and is being built for the benefit of the people, constantly improving the material and spiritual life of the people, taking the happiness of the people as the goal to strive for.
Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duy Loi, Editor-in-Chief of the Vietnam Social Sciences Journal under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, assessed that from the extremely rich practical research of the Vietnamese Revolution in the years of Doi Moi, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made a very important contribution to clarifying and achieving very long strides in political theory science, in perceiving and realizing the model of socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Loi believes that the legacy that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong left for posterity is not only a diverse, rich, massive, profound, scientific, systematic and comprehensive treasure of political theory on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam; but also a treasure of rich practical experience of the Vietnamese revolution; and in particular, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong left a simple, close-to-the-people, shining example of the morality and personality of a true communist.
