What is the reason the Ministry of Agriculture issued regulations to block the harvest of young durian?

Vietnamese durian only accounts for about 5% of the market share in China. The truth about selling young durian

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong - Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) had an interview with reporters of the Industry and Trade Newspaper about this issue.

Harvesting immature, unripe fruits will greatly affect the quality and reputation of Vietnamese durian in the world market. Issuing regulations to block the harvesting of immature durian is necessary, however, why is this a temporary process, sir?

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued Decision No. 362/QD-TT-CCN dated October 9, 2023 on technical procedures for pruning flowers, fruits and harvesting durian.

The content of the process focuses on a number of techniques related to additional pollination, pruning flowers, pruning fruit; overcoming the phenomenon of hard rice, burnt segments; harvesting durian... These are techniques that affect the yield and quality of durian. However, up to now, there has been no separate, complete research on these techniques for each variety as well as each growing region and different durian seasons.

Therefore, this process is temporary, built on the basis of research results and practical experience of experts and related units to promptly serve production requirements. The Department of Crop Production will update and supplement from feedback during the application process through actual production.

What is the reason that the Ministry has to issue this procedure, sir?

The area of durian in our country has grown rapidly in recent years, currently reaching over 120 thousand hectares, grown in all provinces of the Mekong Delta, Southeast, Central Highlands and South Central Coast.

Durian has been and is the commodity with the highest export value in the fruit and vegetable industry, currently durian exports reach approximately 2 billion USD. To develop durian effectively and sustainably, it is necessary to pay attention to and meet the increasingly high requirements of the export market, creating competitiveness in terms of market share.

In particular, along with productivity, fruit quality plays an important role, in which the phenomenon of premature harvest and unripe fruit will greatly affect the quality and reputation of Vietnamese durian.

Why does this regulation only apply to Ri6 and Dona? What percentage of these breeds are present in Vietnam, sir?

Ri6 and Dona are currently the two main varieties, accounting for over 95% of durian production in our country today (in which Ri6 is more popular in the provinces of the Mekong Delta, Dona is more used in the Central Highlands) and has been researched and developed by interested units and invested in by gardeners in recent times.

Along with durian, in recent times, based on the results of research to perfect the production process of units and the results of a number of technical support projects, the Department of Crop Production has issued technical procedures/documents on planting, caring for, and harvesting many types of crops and fruits to serve production such as: rice, lychee, longan, orange, grapefruit, mango, durian, rambutan, banana, pineapple... in which there are recommendations on harvest time for each type.

Vietnam has many different types of crops, so the Department will prioritize the development and promulgation of cultivation procedures (including harvesting content) for key crops.

What results does the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development expect to achieve when issuing this process, sir?

This process is of a recommendation and guidance nature and is not mandatory. However, it is the basis for localities and units to recommend and disseminate in production, and guide gardeners to implement to improve the productivity and quality of durian, avoiding the phenomenon of premature harvesting as has happened.

With the promulgated process, the attention of all levels, sectors, localities, gardeners and businesses will contribute to improving the quality of durian, raising the position of Vietnamese durian.

Thank you!
