Actively increase production
One afternoon in early April, visiting the 460th Infantry Battalion, as soon as we entered the unit gate, we were impressed by the neat and green landscape space. This is the time after a tiring day of training, the officers and soldiers focus on arranging the flower and ornamental garden, taking care of the vegetable garden, with a relaxed and gentle mind, thereby helping to restore health. Taking us through the soldiers' housing area, to the vegetable garden covered in lush green with many kinds of vegetables, Captain Nguyen Xuan Viet - Deputy Battalion Commander of Infantry Battalion 460 introduced: "Over the years, the battalion has always been proactive in increasing production to improve meals and improve the health of soldiers. At this time, officers and soldiers are focusing on doing a good job of preparing to participate in the contest "Green, clean, beautiful vegetable garden associated with the quality of meals and health of soldiers" for new soldier training units in 2025 organized by Military Region 5".

Talking about the contest, Captain Nguyen Xuan Viet said: To carry out the contest effectively and achieve high quality, from the beginning, the unit has focused on building a plan, closely following the contest's content and criteria; actively and proactively doing well all preparation work, determined to achieve the highest results, focusing on contents such as: Leadership, direction, propaganda, education on increased production to ensure the reception and training of new soldiers; a system of books, boards, and signs that are regular and in accordance with regulations; a system of increased production gardens and grading a meal associated with the results of increased production harvests; implementing some main contents in the regular construction of canteens and kitchens...
To improve the efficiency of production, in recent times, the battalion has proactively reviewed the entire production system and area of each unit; planned and built a system of gardens, trellises, ponds, barns, paths, diversified crops, combined with intercropping and crop rotation; installed irrigation systems; made full use of all resources, promoted the sense of responsibility of officers and soldiers... Currently, the unit has planned to expand the production area with garden, trellis, fruit trees, and barns. Of which, the vegetable garden area is more than 3,800m2 , the trellis system is more than 1,600m2 , the fruit garden is nearly 700m2 ; the poultry and livestock farming area is more than 500m2 , with a herd of more than 1,100 pigs, chickens, and ducks; Fish pond of over 1,400m2 , focusing on raising catfish, pomfret, tilapia... In addition, the surrounding area is also planted with fruit trees such as: coconut, mango, longan...; water-bearing leaf garden.
Major Tran Anh Nam - Political Commissar of Infantry Battalion 460 shared: “In 2024, the battalion was ranked excellent in the contest “Green, clean, beautiful regular barracks” organized by Military Region 5. In 2025, for the first time, Military Region 5 organized the contest “Green, clean, beautiful vegetable garden associated with the quality of meals and health of soldiers”, for new soldier training units in the entire military region. Therefore, the officers and soldiers of the entire unit have been focusing on preparing well in all aspects, with the goal of continuing to achieve high achievements in this contest”.
Improve meal quality
Along with promoting increased production, proactively providing fresh vegetables and food on the spot, in recent times, improving the quality of meals and ensuring food hygiene and safety; strictly implementing the regime and order of the dining hall and kitchen; proactively exploiting and creating food sources with reasonable prices... have always been well implemented by the 460th Infantry Battalion. Kitchen food is always monitored and supervised to ensure quantity, quality and food safety. All information is publicly announced and scientifically and fully statistically recorded according to the system of books, tables and signs, in accordance with regulations. The unit maintains 4-5 dishes in the soldiers' meals, of which 2-3 are rich in nutrients; adding more daily meals to meet and exceed the prescribed quantity by 10-15% or more; the daily menu is changed regularly. New soldier Nguyen Minh Duc shared: “Our meals ensure full portions and a diverse menu. Every day, officers and soldiers participate in farming to grow many types of vegetables and tubers to improve meals with more dishes and better taste.”
Thanks to the good implementation of production increase work, in recent times, in addition to the prescribed standard regime, the unit has added 5,000 to 6,500 VND/person/month to the soldiers' meals. During the recent Lunar New Year, the battalion has allocated from the production increase fund to support officers and soldiers from 120,000 VND to 1.2 million VND/person. Notably, in recent years, the unit has always maintained the annual healthy military ratio of over 98.5%, contributing to building a strong and comprehensive "Exemplary Model" unit, successfully completing all assigned tasks.
