Before that, the east, north and even the west, where hundreds of thousands of people were taking refuge, were attacked one after another. A nearby mosque was completely destroyed.

The Israeli military confirmed that it had stepped up operations in Khan Younis, a city just north of Rafah. However, the military did not mention the attacks on Rafah.

As of yesterday, Gaza health authorities estimated that at least 29,410 Palestinians had been killed and 69,465 others injured since Israel launched its offensive on Gaza on October 7, 2023.

As the situation in Gaza continues to worsen, Benny Gantz, a member of Israel's war cabinet, said there were "promising initial signs of progress regarding the hostage deal," Reuters reported on February 22. Gantz also warned that if a new deal is not reached, the Israeli military will continue its Gaza campaign and will not stop despite the Muslim month of Ramadan (March 10 - April 8).

Brett McGurk, the White House coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, arrived in Israel on Tuesday after leaving Egypt as part of a US effort to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas confirmed that its leader Ismail Haniyeh was also in Cairo at the time. The US also called on the International Criminal Court (ICJ) in the Netherlands to overturn a ruling that would have required Israel to immediately withdraw from Gaza.
