On the morning of August 23, the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with the Vietnam Information Security Association - Southern Branch (VNISA Southern) to organize the Southern region's Information Security Conference and Exhibition 2024 with the theme "Securing digital infrastructure, data, and the digital economy against cybercrime".

The conference and exhibition were held at GEM Center (District 1). This is an annual event held every year, aiming to provide visual information in the field of information technology (IT), information security (IS) for leaders of agencies and enterprises that are implementing digital transformation applications, state management agencies at the central level and in the southern provinces.

In the first half of 2024, a series of ransomware attacks targeted large enterprises in Vietnam, paralyzing systems, disrupting operations and business activities, causing significant financial losses. Many enterprises were forced to pay large ransoms to retrieve data and restore systems, losing the trust of customers and partners. The damage was not only economic but also had a long-term impact on the reputation and competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises in the international market.

This year's event will focus on hot issues such as: Safety in cashless transactions, protecting information technology systems serving Ho Chi Minh City's digital transformation, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) supporting traditional solutions of information security, authentication in the context of hackers having smarter means...

In addition, the event also has a series of activities on information security such as: Conference dedicated to leaders of state management agencies and enterprises, scientific seminar on information security, practical information security drills in Ho Chi Minh City, student competition with information security ASEAN 2024...

Mr. Ngo Vi Dong, Chairman of VNISA Southern Branch shared at the event

Mr. Ngo Vi Dong, Chairman of the Southern VNISA branch, said that in 2024, the entire information and communications industry will strive to popularize digital infrastructure and innovate digital applications to develop the digital economy and society.

“We are living in the digital age, all management activities from the government to the business agencies require a strong technology system, accurate database, and smooth operation. Besides the advantages, cyber criminals always know how to take advantage of technology to exploit and carry out schemes such as attacking technology infrastructure and data for profit. The fight against cybercrime is always direct, there must always be measures, raising the spirit of vigilance, and prevention strategies. Therefore, every year, VNISA South coordinates with event organizers to provide agencies and businesses with the current situation of information security, thereby proposing effective solutions to prevent cybercrime”, Mr. Ngo Vi Dong emphasized.

Mr. Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, hopes to receive more suggestions and IT security solutions for Ho Chi Minh City.

At the event, Mr. Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the strong development of digital transformation, in addition to the opportunities that bring about remarkable development, also comes with many challenges and risks, especially in the face of the increasing situation of cybercrime. In 2023, Vietnam had nearly 14,000 cyber attacks, an increase of 10% compared to 2022, the nature of cybercrime is increasingly sophisticated and diverse, causing great impact on the economy, society and national security.

“Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is accelerating digital transformation and building digital infrastructure, which is a very attractive environment for cybercriminals. The city is also making efforts to combat increasingly large cyber attacks, with more and more attacks on state agencies and businesses causing serious consequences. However, in reality, the awareness of people, agencies and businesses about information security is still low; human resources with knowledge and understanding, investment costs for information security have not been focused on; legal policies still have many limitations. Hopefully, through the workshop and exhibition, Ho Chi Minh City will record more opinions and contributions in ensuring information security in the coming time," Mr. Lam Dinh Thang shared.

Many IT security solutions from businesses in Ho Chi Minh City are introduced at the exhibition area.

According to a survey by the Southern VNISA Association, in 2024, many units and businesses have outsourced information security monitoring services to optimize costs (increased from 20% to over 50%) compared to 2023. Backing up data to combat ransomware is an effective way, but up to 59% of organizations and businesses have not implemented or focused on backing up important data. The survey results also show that up to 61% of organizations are currently using cybersecurity measures to reduce damage when attacked, 13% of units are interested but do not have enough information and resources to implement.
