Current status of information security in digital transformation in Vietnam

According to a report by the Vietnam National Cyber Security Technology Company (NCS), in 2023, Vietnam recorded 13,900 cyber security attacks, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2022.

The main targets of attacks are government agencies, banking systems, financial institutions and industrial systems. Notably, ransomware in Vietnam in the first 7 months of 2021 increased by nearly 200% compared to the same period in 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digital transformation, but has also increased cybersecurity threats. The application of digital technology in management, operation and provision of public services generates huge amounts of data, including personal information, business activities and internal documents of state agencies. Without a suitable data protection strategy, the risk of information insecurity will cause serious damage to organizations and individuals.

Challenges in ensuring information security

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of awareness and subjectivity of some individuals and organizations in protecting information. Uncontrolled data sharing creates conditions for high-tech criminals to penetrate the system. In addition, many digital devices and information systems have not been carefully assessed for security, leading to security vulnerabilities.

The rise of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks also poses a major challenge. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, ransomware and data breaches are becoming commonplace, causing significant economic and reputational damage to organizations. Protecting systems against these threats requires significant investment in technology and human resources.

Solutions to ensure information security in digital transformation

To cope with the above challenges, Vietnam has implemented many measures to enhance information security in the digital transformation process. The Government has issued the Law on Information Security and the Law on Cyber Security, along with many decrees and circulars, creating a legal corridor for information protection.

The construction and deployment of modern security systems, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in monitoring, detecting and preventing cyber attacks are being promoted. Organizations and businesses also focus on training employees on cybersecurity awareness, building strict security processes and regularly checking and evaluating the system.

International cooperation in the field of cyber security has also been enhanced, helping Vietnam access new technologies and learn from the experiences of developed countries. Participation in international forums and seminars on information security helps improve the capacity to protect systems against increasingly complex threats.

Information security plays an important role in the digital transformation process in Vietnam. Clearly identifying the current situation, challenges and implementing synchronous solutions will help protect information systems, creating a solid foundation for socio-economic development in the digital age. Close coordination between the government, businesses and people is a key factor to ensure information security in the digital transformation process./.
