On January 6, Hue Central Hospital announced that it had successfully performed surgery to remove a large, dangerous foreign object from the digestive tract, saving the life of a 26-year-old male patient who had a pork bone stuck in his throat.
This is a complex emergency, requiring quick, accurate, and skilled intervention from a team of doctors and medical staff.
Six days before being hospitalized, patient LTV (26 years old, residing in Hue City) accidentally swallowed a pork bone after eating porridge.
The following days, Mr. L. could not eat or drink anything.
Due to difficult family circumstances, Mr. L. did not go to the hospital immediately after choking on a pork bone, but instead treated it at home by methods such as swallowing white rice, but it was ineffective and the symptoms became worse.
Mr. L. was hospitalized with severe pain in his throat, unable to eat or drink, mild difficulty breathing, and severe swelling and pain in his left neck.
Through examination, doctors discovered a foreign object, a large pig bone, located in the thoracic esophagus, which could perforate the esophagus and seriously damage surrounding organs.
Immediately, the patient was transferred to the operating room for rigid esophagoscopy to remove the foreign object under anesthesia.
During the surgery which lasted more than an hour, the doctors skillfully removed the foreign object without causing further damage to the esophagus.
The foreign body was a sharp-pointed pig bone, measuring 30x41 (mm), located in the thoracic esophagus, 20cm from the upper dental arch.
After surgery, the patient was taken to the recovery room for monitoring. Currently, the patient's health condition has stabilized, is gradually recovering and is being closely monitored for post-operative complications.
Dr. Hoang Thi Lan Huong, deputy director of Hue Central Hospital, said that people need to be careful when eating and drinking, especially with foods containing small bones, hard shells or easily swallowed objects such as toothpicks and metal.
In case you feel abnormal after eating, you should go to a medical facility immediately for examination and early intervention. Avoid using unsafe measures such as trying to swallow hard food to push the foreign object out.
