According to Nikkei Asia magazine, one of the world's largest printer manufacturers - Japan's Seiko Epson - is planning to set up a clothing recycling business based on its paper recycling technology.
The new business is expected to be established in 2025, when the European Union's (EU) ban on the destruction of unsold clothing comes into effect.
Current recycling methods use rotating blades to cut clothes, with a fiber recovery rate of only about 10%. Meanwhile, the method developed by Seiko Epson is said to be able to recover more than 50% of the fibers, and the company aims to eventually reach 100%.
To develop the technology, Seiko Epson has partnered with the Hong Kong Textile Research and Development Center (China), which has close ties with global apparel corporations, including financial support from Swedish clothing company H&M. Seiko Epson will leverage the center's relationships to develop sales channels with apparel manufacturers around the world.
