Can I wear a watch in the high school graduation exam room?

Many candidates are worried that wearing a watch into the high school graduation exam room will result in suspension for violating regulations. However, local authorities have confirmed that this is allowed.

On the eve of the high school graduation exam, a principal in Ho Chi Minh City said he received many questions from candidates and parents about whether or not they should bring a watch into the exam room. In fact, many exam rooms do not have wall clocks, or if they do, they do not work properly, making it difficult for candidates to time their test.

According to regulations, the Ministry of Education and Training allows candidates to bring into the examination room pens, pencils, compasses, erasers, rulers, calculators; calculators without text editing functions, without memory cards; Vietnam Geography Atlas for Geography (without marking or writing any other content). This list does not mention wristwatches.

However, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that candidates are allowed to bring into the exam room essential items to ensure their health and serve the exam process such as clothes, shoes, glasses, drinking water with labels removed, medicine and watches.

"These items must not contain information for the purpose of cheating on exams and must not have the features of storing, transmitting, receiving information or images in any form," said Mr. Nam.

Many other localities have made similar announcements. In Vinh Phuc, Director of the Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Huyen said that candidates are still allowed to wear watches, similar to previous years. Mr. Huyen said that banning students from using watches could cause psychological problems and affect the results of the test, because dividing and balancing time is also a strategy when taking the test.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Head of the Quality Management Department, Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, said that the province does not prohibit candidates from bringing necessary items for the test, including glasses and watches. However, Mr. Trung noted that if the exam supervisor discovers any abnormalities, these items will be checked. Therefore, candidates need to comply with the regulations and should not intend to cheat with these devices. Any violations, whether intentional or unintentional, will be handled according to regulations.

The 2023 high school graduation exam will take place on June 28-29 with more than one million candidates. Candidates must take three independent tests: Math, Literature, Foreign Language, and two combined tests: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civic Education for candidates studying the general education program; or History, Geography for candidates studying the continuing education program).

Last year, the national graduation rate was 98.57%.
