"Vietnamese sports have developed strongly, especially recently. However, we have not yet mobilized all resources to help sports develop sustainably, especially when Vietnamese sports are aiming for major arenas such as ASIAD or the Olympics," said Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, at the 2023 Sports Economic Forum.
On the morning of June 3, the Vietnam Sports Economy Forum 2023 was held, discussing the issue of cash flow in sports economics with the focus on the tournament . Three discussion sessions were conducted by prestigious domestic and foreign managers and speakers.
The key issue mentioned by General Director Dang Ha Viet at the Vietnam Sports Economic Forum 2023 is the positioning of tournaments and ways to attract sponsorship as well as exploit television copyrights to create cash flows into tournaments to help sports develop.
Director General of General Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet
Mr. Dang Ha Viet stated his opinion: "Currently, in the world, tournaments such as American football and baseball are leading in generating revenue. Following are tournaments such as NBA basketball or the English Premier League. These are all tournaments with revenue of over 5 billion USD.
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, there are very few tournaments that generate large revenues from sponsorship and television rights, such as V-League or VBA basketball. We need to know that revenue from television rights often accounts for 50-70% of the tournament's revenue.
Therefore, this forum suggests to federations, associations, and tournament organizers ways to "position their potential customers", ways to attract more fans, and especially ways to sell sponsorships and television copyrights most effectively".
According to the General Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet, managing issues related to television copyright is very difficult. "Currently, the sports industry does not have specific regulations related to this. I think this is very important, necessary, and there must be a thorough handling direction to ensure the rights of official television stations that own television copyright.
The role of the media is also very important in calling for awareness of respecting and protecting television copyright. The sports industry will soon meet and discuss with federations and associations, especially the football and basketball federations, as these are the two units that have important television copyrights, to find ways to handle television copyright violations. This will be handled thoroughly because if not, it will leave serious consequences affecting many tournaments in many other sports and federations."
In addition to the issue of television copyright as Mr. Dang Ha Viet mentioned, at the discussion, the slices of issues in sports economy were suggested and discussed based on the policy mechanism on sports, the reality of Vietnamese sports and the experience , successful lessons from sports economic models in countries around the world . From there, it was suggested and helped to plan an accurate vision of the sports economy in Vietnam .
Speakers attending the 2023 Sports Economic Forum
In the world, sports in many countries have truly become a profession in the economic system. The sports economy is a massive machine, linked to many other service production professions, creating jobs, profits, income, contributing significant taxes to the national budget and creating positive social values.
The general context of Vietnamese sports in recent years has been increasingly prosperous. We have made many changes and good practices to promote the socialization of sports, gradually mobilizing the participation and contribution of the whole society for sports to develop and win glory, from the continent to the Olympics. A typical example is the 31st SEA Games, which rose to prominence, overcoming adversity and fear of the pandemic to achieve brilliant successes, a breakthrough ninth national sports festival. Most recently, the Vietnamese sports delegation ranked first for the first time with 136 gold medals at the SEA Games held abroad.
However, Vietnam is currently generally considered to be in the slow-developing sports industry. Therefore, it is necessary to learn, exchange experiences, urgently change, accelerate to avoid falling behind and build a sports industry and economy that is suitable for policy conditions and socialized resources, but must also adapt and keep pace with the general development trends of sports industry and economy in the region, continent and even the world.
The Vietnam Sports Economic Forum 2023 is organized with the goal of creating an open forum to gather comprehensive views, opinions, sharing, and valuable experiences from organizations and individuals on issues related to the management and development of Vietnam's sports economy both at present and in the future.
