President Vo Van Thuong and his wife arrived at Vienna International Airport, beginning an official visit to Austria at the invitation of President Alexander Van der Bellen.
Welcoming the President and his wife at Vienna International Airport this afternoon were representatives of agencies under the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Honor Guard holding guns standing along both sides of the red carpet .
The visit is the opening activity of President Vo Van Thuong's European working trip, including an official visit to Austria, a state visit to Italy and a visit to the Vatican from July 23-28. This is the first visit to Austria by a Vietnamese President in 15 years.
President Vo Van Thuong is scheduled to hold talks with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, meet with leaders of the Senate and several Austrian localities. The President is also scheduled to meet with leaders of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and talk with representatives of the Vietnamese community in Austria and several European countries.

In 1972, Austria was one of the first countries in Europe to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam. Last year, Vietnam and Austria celebrated 50 years of relations.
In 2021, two-way trade turnover between the two countries reached 3.35 billion USD, up 5.5% compared to 2020. In 2022, due to the impact of Covid-19, bilateral trade turnover reached 2.79 billion USD, down 16.7% compared to 2021.
According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, by May 2023, Austria ranked 44th out of 143 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with 41 projects worth 148 million USD. About 6,000 Vietnamese people live in Austria.
According to Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam Hans-Peter Glanzer, the visit of President Vo Van Thuong is of great significance, contributing to strengthening relations between the two countries and is an opportunity to enhance cooperation.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Austria Nguyen Trung Kien said that President Vo Van Thuong's visit affirmed the excellent bilateral relationship that is developing comprehensively between the two countries, and was also an opportunity for the President to meet and work with multilateral diplomatic forums, thereby affirming Vietnam's voice and international role.
