Passing many rounds of competition and candidates from many countries, Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan is the 5th Vietnamese officer to take up duty at the United Nations headquarters.
On the morning of June 12, the Ministry of National Defense organized a ceremony to present the decision of the President and the Minister of National Defense to officers on duty at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA. Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, presented the decision to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan, Deputy Commander of the Training Center (Vietnam Peacekeeping Department).
Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, said that Senior Colonel Truong Anh Tuan is the fourth officer of the Ministry of National Defense and the fifth officer of Vietnam to take up a position at the United Nations headquarters. Surpassing 193 countries applying, Senior Colonel Truong Anh Tuan was selected (along with Pakistan) for the position of Military Affairs Officer.

Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh said that this once again proves the working capacity of Vietnam People's Army officers in the international environment in general and the environment with many high requirements of the United Nations in particular.
Speaking at the assignment, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien highly appreciated the results of the forces participating in the UN peacekeeping operations in recent times, and congratulated Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan on being honored to receive the decision on this occasion.
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien requested Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan to thoroughly grasp and strictly implement the foreign policy and viewpoints of the Party, State and Army; strictly comply with military discipline, regulations of the United Nations, laws of the host country, and instructions of competent authorities; ensure absolute safety for people and equipment; uphold the sense of responsibility and international solidarity, proactively overcome all difficulties, grasp the local situation, and promptly carry out assigned duties and tasks.
Upon receiving the assignment, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan affirmed that he would maintain internal and international solidarity, determined to complete the tasks assigned by the United Nations, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense; regularly study and evaluate the situation to proactively ensure security and safety, promptly handle situations when performing tasks, ensure absolute safety for people and equipment; and actively participate in humanitarian activities, contributing to spreading the image of the country and people of Vietnam.

To be selected for the above position, Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan had to go through 3 rounds of application: Document screening, written test and direct interview. The number of applications from member countries for one position ranged from 150 to 200.
Before being recruited to the United Nations headquarters, Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan had served as a Liaison Officer at the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (July 2015 - July 2016); a graduate student in program development at the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, and researched national security and defense strategies at the US National Defense Academy.
To date, Vietnam has sent over 800 officers and staff from the Army and Police forces to deploy as individuals and units at three missions and the United Nations headquarters.
According to the assessment of the UN missions and agencies, Vietnamese officers have made great efforts in carrying out their assigned tasks at the missions, demonstrating high professionalism and discipline. Vietnamese soldiers have left many good impressions on the mission leaders, international colleagues and local people with their specific, practical and highly humane contributions.
