Many social media accounts are selling moon cakes that are still valid until the end of September or October at a loss, with prices only 30-70% lower than a few days before the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (September 17).

Account Phuong Nguyen posted a post selling Kinh Do brand mooncakes weighing 150gr - 180gr for only 35,000 VND/piece. Meanwhile, just a few days ago, the price of each cake of this brand was 95,000 VND.

Meanwhile, Rosepie brand mooncakes are being sold at a 70% discount compared to before, a combo of 5 cakes is only 125,000 VND, customers buying 10 cakes only have 220,000 VND, equivalent to 22,000 VND/cake.

Maison brand mooncakes are sold for 189,000 VND/10 pieces; Madam Huong mooncakes are on clearance for 200,000 VND/6 pieces...

Besides, handmade mooncakes are also liquidated at cheaper prices, ranging from 9,000 VND to 20,000 VND/piece.

Ms. Vu Minh Quynh (Dong Da district, Hanoi) posted on social media to liquidate more than 100 moon cakes of various types.

According to Ms. Quynh, she and a friend pooled money to import moon cakes to sell during the Mid-Autumn Festival with the hope of earning some profit. At present, she has recovered all the capital invested, but still has more than 100 cakes in stock. Therefore, she is forced to sell them at a low price with the hope of earning a little more.

"There aren't many cakes left, if we keep the price low, there won't be any customers. My friend and I decided to liquidate, selling at any price to quickly sell out and summarize the income this Mid-Autumn Festival," said Ms. Quynh.

Similarly, Ms. Tran Thu Trang (Ba Dinh district, Hanoi) also advertised a batch of Maison moon cakes for sale at a price reduced by 70% compared to a few days before the full moon of August.

Ms. Trang said that this year, in preparation for the Mid-Autumn Festival, the North has been experiencing continuous storms and rain, so people's demand for moon cakes has also decreased sharply.

"This year's Mid-Autumn Festival does not have the same atmosphere as every year due to the complicated storms and rains. I imported 500 Maison cakes to sell, but now there are still nearly 200 left. The shelf life of these cakes is only about half a month, so I have to accept selling them at a loss, below cost price, in the hope of recovering the capital. In the coming days, the price of cakes may continue to decrease," said Ms. Trang.

Not only on online markets, according to a survey, although the Mid-Autumn Festival has passed, many cake stalls are still open on the streets of Hanoi and are offering deep discounts to attract customers.

On streets such as My Dinh, Thanh Nhan, Giang Vo, Truong Dinh... many mobile cake stalls are still present and most of them have signs "Big sale", "50% discount", "Moon cakes discounted 25k - 35k". However, these attractive offers have not attracted many customers.

On Thanh Nhan Street (Hai Ba Trung District), a cake stall with a large sign reading "High-end mooncakes on sale" attracts many passersby, although not many customers. The cheapest cakes here are sold for 15,000 - 20,000 VND/piece, while high-end branded cakes are also discounted by 50 - 70%, only 25,000 - 35,000 VND/piece.

According to the store staff, the cakes are purchased from many major brands and have full labels and expiration dates, so customers can be completely assured of the quality.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hai (Cau Giay District, Hanoi) has just ordered 2 boxes of 4 moon cakes from a seller on social media, for only 150,000 VND, much cheaper than the previous days.

According to Ms. Hai, the price of moon cakes this year is quite high, so she cannot afford to buy many. Currently, seeing on social networks that moon cakes are being liquidated at only 1/3 of the price a few days ago, she bought 8 cakes with 3 different flavors to enjoy with her family.

According to a moon cake sales employee, the company will buy back unsold products and classify each filling and crust separately to make different types of cakes, ham, and baked cakes. Expired or near-expired products will be collected and used as animal feed.
