On June 20, US President Joe Biden convened a meeting with technology leaders to discuss the potential and risks of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
At a meeting with eight technology experts from academia and advocacy groups, President Biden said that in the next 10 years, technology will see more changes than in the past 50 years, mainly thanks to the remarkable development of AI.
Among the experts attending the meeting were Tristan Harris, head of the Center for Humane Technology; Jim Steyer, head of Common Sense Media; and Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League.
The emergence of ChatGPT and other AI chatbot tools has spurred investment in the AI field. AI tools are capable of generating text, composing music, creating images, and coding computers.
Experts say that the application of automation will help increase labor productivity, but also has many potential risks. Accordingly, AI can cause many workers to lose their jobs.
The technology also risks being exploited to create images and videos containing unverified information, which could have a number of consequences, including potentially influencing elections.
Governments and the European Union (EU) are scrambling to find solutions to regulate AI and prevent the negative impacts of this technology before it is too late.
The US government is also considering ways to regulate AI so that it can both use AI to promote economic growth and ensure national security, and prevent potential threats from this technology. Last May, the US government gathered technology CEOs at the White House to discuss ways to regulate AI.
Currently, top officials in the US Government meet 2-3 times a week on AI issues. The US Government wants private companies to participate in addressing possible risks from AI./.
