Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on May 23 that a cross-border raid from Ukraine into Russia's Belgorod province that injured at least eight civilians is a matter of great concern, according to RT.

According to RT, on May 22, a group of saboteurs accused of being Ukrainians infiltrated the Grayvoron district in the west of the city of Belgorod. At that time, the Russian army and security forces tried to repel the attack.

Responding to the attack today, Mr Peskov said that "what happened yesterday is certainly a matter of deep concern", adding that "this once again confirms that Ukrainian militants continue their activities against our country".

"This requires a lot of effort on our part. These efforts continue and the special military operation continues to prevent such intrusions in the future," Mr. Peskov stressed.

Mr Peskov did not provide exact figures on the number of people involved in the raid, explaining that Russian special services were still investigating.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said today that the remaining units it blamed for the May 22 cross-border attack from Ukraine into Belgorod province had been forced back into Ukrainian territory, according to Reuters. The Russian Defense Ministry also said that "more than 70 attackers were destroyed."

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov told residents who fled after the attack on Tuesday that it was still not safe to return to their homes, Reuters reported.

Also today, Russia's Investigative Committee said it had opened a criminal case into the raid, with possible charges including terrorism, assault on law enforcement officers, attempted murder and property damage, according to RT.

Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack in Belgorod. Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said today that Kyiv's denial of involvement in the May 22 attack was a "lie", according to RIA news agency. There is no information yet on Kyiv's reaction.

In a war update this morning, May 23, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that in the previous 24 hours, Russia had carried out 20 missile attacks targeting the provinces of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, using cruise missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-300 air defense missiles, according to The Kyiv Independent .

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also reported more than 30 clashes with Russian troops in the Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka directions in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Also according to the war update, the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces shot down four Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, one Mi-24 attack helicopter, 25 drones and nine reconnaissance drones in the previous 24 hours.

Ukrainian artillery and missile forces attacked four Russian control points, three military equipment stations, four ammunition depots, 11 artillery systems, one radio station and three radio-electronic warfare systems, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

EU begins training Ukrainian pilots to use F-16

European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said today that Ukrainian pilots have begun training to use F-16 fighter jets in a number of countries, according to TASS news agency.

"I am very happy that finally the training of pilots using F-16 has started in some countries. It will take time but the sooner the better and that will open up the opportunity to supply aircraft," Mr. Borrell said when attending a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels (Belgium).

Asked in which country the training of Ukrainian pilots to use F-16s had begun, Borrell replied: "In Poland, for example."

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that the supply of new weapons, including aircraft, to Kyiv cannot fundamentally change the course of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, according to TASS.

The head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Bruno Kahl assessed that Russia is capable of continuing its military campaign in Ukraine "for a long time".

"Russia, as before, still has the ability to conduct [its special military operations] for a long time," DPA news agency quoted Mr. Kahl as saying, according to TASS on May 23.
