ChatGPT overloaded, OpenAI delays new product launch

In a series of posts on social network X on April 1 (Vietnam time), Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the popularity of the new image generation tool integrated into ChatGPT will cause delays in the release of other products.

“We are trying to keep things under control, but you can expect new releases from OpenAI to be delayed, some features to be broken, and service to be slow at times as we face capacity challenges,” Altman wrote. “We are working hard to make sure everything is running as stable as possible,” he added.

OpenAI’s new image generation feature was launched to much fanfare and controversy, thanks to its ability to recreate a variety of art styles, like Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn animations. Over the weekend, Atltman shared on X that the company has “not been able to keep up with demand” since the feature’s launch, and that the team has been working nights and weekends to keep the service running.

According to Altman’s X post, at one point on April 1, ChatGPT added 1 million new users in just one hour. ChatGPT now has about 500 million weekly users, including 20 million paying users — up from 300 million users and 15.5 million paying users by the end of 2024.

To ease the pressure, OpenAI has postponed the release of its image-generating tool for free ChatGPT users and temporarily disabled video-generating features for new users of Sora, the company's AI toolkit for communications.
