Goals are pretty much the most important thing in football, and strikers are the ones tasked with putting the ball in the net. A sharp striker can help a team win the title or avoid relegation, while a poor 'number 9' can have serious consequences.
This year's Premier League season has seen many impressive strikers such as Chris Wood, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak, while Darwin Nunez and Joshua Zirkzee have been criticised for wasting chances and showing inconsistent form in front of goal.
Finishing performance
Opta data shows which strikers are the most effective in the Premier League 2024/25, based on shot conversion rate. Accordingly, Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood leads the way with a conversion rate of 34%, the highest among strikers who have played at least 900 minutes (10 matches).
Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland are also in the top group with a large number of goals and stable performance (over 30%). Notably, Jorgen Strand-Larsen of Wolves unexpectedly made his mark in his first season in the Premier League with a rate of 23%, helping the home team escape the danger zone.
In contrast, Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a difficult season with a conversion rate of just 6%, the worst in the league. This partly explains why manager David Moyes had to turn to another striker, Beto.
Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee also disappointed in his debut season with a shot rate of just 12%. Southampton, struggling at the bottom of the table, were made to pay the price as Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer scored just four goals from 52 shots (both at a 7.6% rate).

Expected Goals (xG)
The xG metric - which measures expected goals - also shows a marked difference in performances from strikers. Chris Wood has an impressive xG of 7 more goals than expected, while Wolves' Matheus Cunha has also scored 13 against 6 expected goals.
Mohamed Salah is also having a phenomenal season with 27 goals, far exceeding the predicted number of 5 goals. On the contrary, Calvert-Lewin and Archer have failed to live up to expectations, scoring 6 goals less than expected, while Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze has only scored 2 goals despite an xG of 6.
Calvert-Lewin was even worse in another area, missing 13 clear-cut chances. However, the English striker only ranked 7th in the league in terms of both missed chances and chances. Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea) and Kai Havertz (Arsenal) were the two leaders, with the duo missing 15 chances each.
Liverpool's Darwin Nunez has received plenty of criticism, but he has only missed six clear-cut chances in the Premier League, far behind Calvert-Lewin, Nicolas Jackson and Kai Havertz.
