In recent years, the macadamia nut growing model of Mr. Le Xuan Cuong's family, Zone 3, Vinh Lai Commune, Lam Thao District has initially brought positive economic efficiency, opening up a new direction and promoting potential, advantages, creating new agricultural products for the locality. This is also the first model in the province to successfully grow macadamia nuts with delicious quality.
Mr. Le Xuan Cuong's family invested in macadamia shelling and sorting machines.
Mr. Le Xuan Cuong shared: “Through research on mass media, I learned about macadamia trees. After a process of research and knowledge accumulation, in September 2011, I boldly bought 200 macadamia trees from the Forestry Seed Research Center in Ba Vi, Hanoi to plant on an area of 6,000m2 in Dong Duong area. In the 3rd year, the trees began to bear fruit, and in the 6th year they bore fruit steadily. Macadamia fruits have high nutritional content, can be stored for a long time, are not afraid of spoilage, have high selling prices, and are favored by the market."
To facilitate the development of the model, the sectors, units, and professional staff of the district and commune regularly care for, support, and accompany his family to follow the technical instructions for planting, caring for, processing, and preserving macadamia issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, complying with the macadamia production process in the direction of high technology, good agricultural production (VietGAP, GlobalGAP...), and organic agriculture to create quality and safe macadamia products.
Macadamia trees grow and develop well, initially suitable for local climate and soil.
Comrade Vuong Van Ung - Chairman of Vinh Lai Commune People's Committee said: "Macadamia trees initially showed to be suitable for the local climate and soil, increasing people's income, contributing to the shift in agricultural structure, associated with the construction of new rural areas, civilized residential areas, at the same time promoting potential, advantages and creating typical products, developing the local socio-economy".
After mastering the techniques and care for the tree to produce many fruits, Mr. Cuong continued to buy 100 more seedlings to plant. Up to now, his family's macadamia trees have grown and developed well on an area of 1.5 hectares with a total of more than 300 trees, of which nearly 200 trees are being harvested. On average, each tree yields 10kg of dry nuts, with a selling price of 250,000 - 300,000 VND/kg of cracked dried nuts, earning hundreds of millions of VND/year. The family's macadamia products are currently not enough to supply the market, the macadamia tree growing model has been visited by many people in and outside the province, learned from experience, and followed.
Vinh Lai Commune is completing documents and procedures to register macadamia products that meet 3-star OCOP standards.
To increasingly improve product quality, along with planting and caring according to the correct technical process, Mr. Cuong has invested in a number of equipment and machines applying scientific and technological advances for preliminary processing and manufacturing such as fruit shelling machines, seed sorting machines, dehumidification dryers, seed drying machines, seed slotting machines, etc.
Comrade Dang Thi Thu Hien - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Thao district said: "The district aims to develop Vinh Lai commune's macadamia nut products to meet 3-star OCOP standards in 2024; support the commune with some equipment, machinery, facilities, seedlings... to expand the scale and develop products".
With the effectiveness of the model, Vinh Lai commune is completing documents and procedures to register macadamia products meeting 3-star OCOP standards by the end of this year, opening up a new direction for local agricultural products.
