We arrived at Trung Chinh area, Phung Nguyen commune, Lam Thao district, when the locals and construction units were busy dismantling old fences and leveling the ground to create a clean surface for expanding the road in the area. The atmosphere of road construction was as lively as a large construction site, but what was special was that there were not only construction workers but also local people voluntarily contributing their labor and land to help complete the road as soon as possible.
To improve transportation infrastructure and fulfill the transportation criteria for Phung Nguyen to achieve advanced new rural commune status, the local government proposed a road expansion plan. Recognizing the long-term benefits of the project, residents of Trung Chinh area proactively discussed and agreed with the local government on donating land. Along this road, 15 households voluntarily moved their fences, donated over 200 square meters of land, dismantled existing structures, and voluntarily rebuilt their family's buildings, ensuring the new road surface is at least 5 meters wide.
The road that needs widening starts from Son Duong Cooperative and goes to the intersection in Dung Hien area, Phung Nguyen commune.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, Head of Trung Chinh area, Phung Nguyen commune, informed: "Through surveys and counting, there are 15 households located close to the road that need to donate land for road expansion, including 2 households with Party members. In fact, without any persuasion or encouragement, some officials, Party members, and residents have set an example by voluntarily demolishing walls and houses to hand over the land."
Besides, there were some dissenting opinions, and some households were not entirely in agreement because they did not understand the benefits of donating land for road construction. However, with the efforts, persuasion, and exemplary leadership of cadres and Party members, combined with the Party Committee, Women's Association, Senior Citizens' Association, and Veterans' Association of the area, who repeatedly went down to persuade and mobilize, the entire area unanimously decided to implement the project.”
The initiative to donate land and build roads has received the unanimous support of the residents of Trung Chinh area.
As a pioneering Party member who donated land, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoan, from Trung Chinh area, Phung Nguyen commune, said: “My family donated about 17 meters of land in length and width, with one end set back 0.2 meters and the other 0.4 meters. The policy of donating land to open roads is a necessary thing to do, helping people have convenient access. Everyone in the neighborhood is enthusiastic, happy, and supportive.”
Commune and neighborhood officials have repeatedly come down to encourage people to join hands and contribute to building the New Rural Area. As a Party member, I must set an example to gain the people's trust and consensus. When I voluntarily moved my fence, donated land, and rebuilt, many households also responded, creating a movement to collectively build our homeland.”
Residents dismantled fences and outbuildings to donate land for road construction.
With the road widened, transportation improved, and the local economy developed, everyone benefited. Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hop's family in Trung Chinh area, Phung Nguyen commune, donated 31 meters of land in length and 1.3 meters in width.
“After being explained the benefits of the new road, and realizing it was a necessary step, my family dismantled the stainless steel gate and the solidly built fence to hand over the land. During the handover process, the local authorities also assisted the people in demolishing and clearing the fence, paving bricks, etc. The demolition and reconstruction are estimated to cost my family about 100 million VND, but thinking that donating land to open a road will provide a wide, beautiful, and safe road for future generations, I feel very happy,” Mr. Hop said.
Donating land for road construction is not an easy task, as the concept of "every inch of land is worth its weight in gold" has long been associated with the interests of the people. Moreover, giving up a portion of ancestral land is a source of concern for many. However, with the unity and determination of the Party committee and government, and the agreement and support of the people, the initial stages of construction have proceeded smoothly.
During the land handover process, the People's Committee of the commune also assisted the people in demolishing and clearing away fences, paving bricks, etc.
Comrade Cao Bá Kiêm - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phùng Nguyên commune shared: "The project to renovate and upgrade the rural road section from Sơn Dương Cooperative to Dụng Hiền intersection in Phùng Nguyên commune has a length of 564.1m, a width of 5m, with a total investment of 4.5 billion VND. The relocation of fences and land donation by the people along the road has spread widely throughout the commune, contributing to ensuring traffic safety and serving the transportation needs of people inside and outside the commune better. It contributes to completing the transportation criteria for Phùng Nguyên to achieve advanced new rural commune status, creating a foundation to strive to build Phùng Nguyên into a model new rural commune in the district."
With the active and coordinated involvement of the entire political system, and the Party's will aligning with the people's aspirations, the movement to donate land for expanding rural roads has contributed to improving rural infrastructure and raising the quality of life in Ban Nguyen commune. The land donated today will become solid steps on the path of development, making the homeland increasingly prosperous and modern.
