In the first days of the new spring, when visiting the fields of Nha Ro and Di Tri, Son Vi commune, Lam Thao district, one can feel the bustling, hurried atmosphere mixed with the cheerful laughter of farmers busy harvesting potatoes in the fields.
In the winter crop of 2024, Son Vi Commune People's Committee coordinated with Pepsico Vietnam Food Company Limited to deploy a pilot planting model of 5.5 hectares of American FL2215 potatoes (American potatoes for making snacks) in two fields of Nha Ro and Di Tri. This is an important step in linking production and consumption of agricultural products in the locality.
Under this model, Pepsico Vietnam Foods Company Limited will supply 100% of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and technical support for farmers. After about 3 months since planting, the potato plants have grown well, and the company has guaranteed the output of all products that meet requirements.
People are busy harvesting potatoes in the first days of spring.
As one of the households with the largest potato growing area in the region, Ms. Bui Thi Kim Duc, Zone 8, Son Vi Commune said: “My family harvested nearly 1 ton of potatoes on an area of about 2 sao of land, which the company purchased at 7,700 VND/kg. To be able to harvest all the potatoes in a day, I had to mobilize 4 people in the family to harvest together. The American potato model gives an average income of 3 million VND/sao, after deducting the cost of seeds and fertilizers, the family earned a profit of more than 4.5 million VND when growing potatoes on 2 sao of land. The results from this year's winter crop make my family very excited."
FL2215 potato variety imported from PepsiCo Group worldwide has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam for production. This is a heat-resistant potato variety that can be planted early in winter conditions in the northern provinces. FL2215 variety has good resistance to pests and diseases, especially late blight, and high yield, averaging 20 - 35 tons/ha, if cultivated and cared for well, it can reach 45 tons/ha. |
American FL2215 potatoes were purchased by Pepsico Vietnam Food Company Limited at VND 7,700/kg.
The round, beautiful potatoes are harvested by local people using manual methods to prevent the potatoes from being bruised or scratched, helping to preserve them well during transportation.
In addition to households, some residential areas in the commune also implemented the potato growing model. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, head of area 18, Son Vi commune, shared: "We harvested more than 700 kg of potatoes on an area of about 1.5 sao of land with the participation of 6 members of the Women's Union and Farmers' Association of residential area 18.
Compared to other winter crops, American potatoes have high productivity, helping people increase their income. We are provided with seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, while the commune supports plowing and irrigation, requiring only 4-5 main sessions to take care of the fields. Next year, if we have the opportunity to expand the cultivated area, we will continue to respond."
FL2215 potato variety has good resistance to pests and diseases, especially late blight.
Not only in the 2024 winter crop, in recent years, Son Vi commune has actively implemented solutions to promote agricultural economy, proactively linking with units to implement new high-yield varieties such as: Sweet potatoes, corn for seeds, cucumbers, pumpkins... The goal is to increase income for rural workers, gradually change people's thinking and awareness of agricultural production in the direction of commodity economy, exploiting the natural advantages of the locality.
Mr. Chu Duc Oanh - Chairman of Son Vi Commune People's Committee said: "This winter crop, after the successful implementation of the sweet potato growing model, we have cooperated with enterprises to implement the American potato growing model. Through harvesting and evaluation, the initial results show that the model brings high economic value, and people are very excited. In the coming time, the commune will continue to promote the conversion of crop structure, towards forming concentrated specialized production areas."
After deducting the cost of seeds and fertilizers, people earn about 2 million VND/sao from the potato growing model.
Filling vacant land in the winter crop with suitable crops has become a positive trend in many localities. After harvesting potatoes, people in Son Vi commune will continue to sow rice in the Chiem Xuan crop. This not only helps optimize land use efficiency but also contributes to rural economic development.
In the coming time, Son Vi commune will continue to promote the conversion of crop structure, towards forming concentrated specialized production areas.
The initial success of the American potato growing model in the first year of implementation in Son Vi commune opens up prospects for expanding the area and attracting more farmers to participate. At the same time, this model also contributes to promoting the connection of "6 houses" in agricultural production, including: Farmers, the state, scientists, businesses, banks and distributors, to create a sustainable value chain for agricultural products.
The cooperation between Son Vi commune and enterprises not only brings economic benefits to the people but also contributes to the sustainable development of the local agricultural sector. This is a typical model of effective cooperation between enterprises and farmers, towards the common goal of developing modern and sustainable agriculture.
