The student with products for the disabled

Robotic arms modeled after human arms, glasses to support the visually impaired… and many other projects have helped student Nguyen Tan Dung win consecutive awards at scientific innovation competitions. Dung dreams that one day in the not too distant future, his projects will be realized into products that will reach users.

Passion since childhood

Nguyen Tan Dung (grade 12, Bui Duc Tai High School, Hai Lang District, Quang Tri) has had a passion for and interest in exploring technology-related toys since grade 9. He often bought battery-powered and motor-powered toys, then disassembled them to reassemble them into other things. From there, his passion for technology grew.

"In high school, I was taught more about electronics and engineering by Mr. Nguyen Tuan, my physics teacher. He gave me small projects and guided me through them, which made me more interested in creating electronic devices," Dung said.

Dung started his challenge in the science innovation contest held in 2022 with the project "Smart Bathroom". "This project was thought up by me and my teacher, based on a real story of a family who had an accident due to an electric leak while bathing. I created a sensor system, when someone steps in, the electrical system will stop working to ensure safety. But unfortunately, my product did not win any prizes," Dung recalled.

The pressure of the first failure and the time wasted made his studying decline... but Dung still did not give up. "I am still not discouraged, the first project failed but it further ignited my passion for science and technology . I try to balance my working and studying time, to reassure my parents," Dung shared.

3 years, 7 projects and a bunch of awards

Dung continued to pursue and implement the project "System for counting and classifying products by color". And then the student's efforts were rewarded with many awards.

The 12th grade student is still diligent and dedicated to his creative projects.

Dung hopes that one day in the near future his projects will be realized, becoming specific products delivered to users.

"During a trip to Huong Hoa district to visit coffee gardens, I saw farmers working very hard to select coffee beans for classification. Most of them did it manually or with laser machines which were very expensive. A new idea popped into my head...", Dung said.

At that time, Dung created a low-cost sorting machine that could be used not only with coffee beans but also with any agricultural product, accessible to all farmers. The product also helped Dung "win" many awards such as the first prize for young creativity at the district level, the third prize for young creativity at the provincial level, and the encouragement prize for the student-student startup idea contest.

Continuing the momentum, Dung carried out the project " Robotic arm simulating a human arm" to participate in the provincial youth innovation contest in 2023 - 2024 and won third prize. The following year, Dung created the product "ViSion Mate glasses to support the visually impaired", which was one of three products representing Quang Tri province to participate in the national science and technology contest.

"The glasses use artificial intelligence to scan the space in front of me, then use voice to convey information to the visually impaired. This product won first prize in the provincial innovation competition, second prize in the provincial science and technology competition, and will participate in the national competition on March 19," Dung shared.

Teacher Nguyen Tuan was very impressed by Dung's diligence and passion for technical innovation and hoped that his favorite student would achieve much success in the future. "Dung is an outstanding student, helping the school become the third school in the province to have a product submitted to the national science and technology competition. Dung always dreams that one day in the near future his projects will be realized and applied in reality, especially products for the disabled," said teacher Tuan.
