On March 20, Thu Duc City Hospital said it had received a 5-year-old boy who had inserted a pencil about 8cm long into his anus.
The incident occurred while the mother was doing housework, the boy complained of pain and confessed his actions. The family immediately took the boy to a nearby medical facility, where an X-ray showed a foreign object in his pelvis. The child was transferred to Thu Duc City Hospital.
Here, Dr. Huynh Tan Dat, Department of General Surgery, Thu Duc City Hospital conducted a preliminary examination and determined that there was a foreign object in the child's anal canal but it had not caused serious damage.

The patient was taken to the operating room and given endotracheal anesthesia. During the procedure, the doctor discovered the tip of a pencil protruding from the anus, so he removed the foreign object.
Examination of the anal canal and rectal mucosa showed no significant lesions. After one day of monitoring, the patient was stable and discharged from the hospital.
Dr. Huynh Tan Dat warned that this is not a rare case. Children, especially preschoolers, tend to be curious and are not yet aware of the dangers of putting foreign objects into their bodies. In cases where children swallow coins or insert foreign objects into their noses, ears or anus, it can cause blockages, infections, and even threaten the child's life.
To prevent the above accidents, parents need to take some important measures such as always observing children, keeping sharp and dangerous objects out of reach of children, educating children about the risks of introducing foreign objects into the body. At the same time, knowing how to handle the situation promptly when an incident occurs.
