With the concept that as a party member and association official, one must be proactive in taking the lead in everything, Mr. Ho Van Vy, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Huong Son Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province, has sought to promote the local advantages, invest in building a garden-pond-cage (VAC) economic model, striving to become rich legitimately. This is a model for people in the commune to learn and follow.

Born and raised on the hilly land of Moi village, Huong Son commune, after graduating from high school, Mr. Vy attended the Medical College (now the Medical College) of Quang Tri. After completing the course, in 2012, he returned to his hometown to start a family. This was the most difficult time for him and his wife because they lacked both experience and capital for production. Not resigned to poverty, the couple was determined to overcome difficulties and rise up.
Heaven does not disappoint those who try. From self-taught knowledge, research through books, newspapers and the internet, learning from his parents' experiences and with support from a loan from the district's Social Policy Bank, Mr. Vy started building the VAC model.
Taking advantage of the available land potential with a total area of about 10 hectares, combining the local advantages of favorable climate and good soil, Mr. Vy expanded the cultivation area every year with key crops such as cajuput, cassava, tung, rice and some other plants. He invested in building quite systematic barns to raise buffaloes and cows. At the same time, he dug ponds to raise fish to take advantage of the abundant grass resources in the area. To improve the efficiency of his family's economic model, he actively participated in training courses, transferred scientific and technical advances and regularly learned from effective economic models in other localities.
Currently, Mr. Vy's family has successfully developed the VAC economic model with 5 hectares of cajuput, 2 hectares of cassava, 3 hectares of bamboo; a herd of 10 buffaloes and cows and 2 ponds of grass carp, catfish, tilapia... After deducting all expenses, Mr. Vy's family's average annual income is more than 100 million VND. For many consecutive years, he has been voted as a good farmer household at the commune level.
In 2018, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Huong Son Commune and Secretary of the New Village Party Cell. Mr. Vy shared: “As an association officer, if we want members to change their thinking and ways of doing economic development, we must do it ourselves first. Developing the VAC economic model is the right direction, so I chose it. The advantage of the VAC model is that farmers can take advantage of water sources, food, and waste to develop, bringing high economic efficiency. In the coming time, I will continue to invest in expanding, becoming a VAC model for farmer members to visit and learn.”
To help farmer members apply the model and develop production, recently, he and the commune's Farmers' Association Executive Committee have coordinated with all levels and sectors to open 16 vocational training classes, training on transferring science and technology in animal husbandry and cultivation with the participation of more than 150 members; providing credit to members to borrow 8 billion VND from the district's Social Policy Bank to invest in production and business.
Thanks to that, the number of good production households at all levels in the commune is always higher year after year. Up to now, the whole Huong Son commune has 45 households achieving the title of good production households at all levels. Many farming households have invested in diversifying production, improving product quality, creating jobs for many workers, contributing to the construction of new rural areas in the locality.
Chairman of Huong Son Commune Farmers Ho Van Dam assessed: “In recent years, the movement of economic development to achieve sustainable poverty reduction in the commune has developed extensively. Members have actively transformed the structure of crops and livestock, aiming at sustainable agricultural economic development. Thanks to that, more and more good models and new ways of doing things have appeared for high economic efficiency. Many individuals and groups have been commended at all levels for their outstanding achievements in the economic development movement, Mr. Vy is one of those typical examples.
In the coming time, the Commune Farmers' Association will continue to do a good job of supporting loans, transferring science and technology, organizing vocational training, training to improve professional skills for members and accompanying members to build and expand sustainable economic models, contributing to the implementation of local socio-economic development goals.
