Kostich said that the company is always evaluating how it moves forward and has learned a lot of lessons over the past 20 years.

This year's game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , will build on the foundations of last year's game and pick from the past with remastered versions of the original Modern Warfare 2 maps. Whether fans can expect more Call of Duty games in this vein in the coming years remains to be seen.

It's also unclear whether Microsoft will make any major changes to the franchise if its acquisition of Activision goes through later this month.
