Grasping consumer tastes, in recent years many households in Bai Vang village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district, Lang Son province have switched to growing Taiwanese apple trees. Taiwanese apples are big, cool, sweet, crunchy, and are sold out as soon as they are harvested.
In late February, we had the opportunity to return to Bai Vang village. In the rainy, cold atmosphere of early spring, wherever we went, we heard laughter and people talking about growing and selling apples, which dispelled the coldness of early spring.

The first family we visited was Mr. Dang Van Tiem's house in Bai Vang village, the household that grows the most Taiwanese apple trees in the village, with 800 trees.
Planting 800 Taiwanese apple trees, earning 300 million/year
Mr. Tiem excitedly said: After many times of trying to grow fruit trees to develop the economy, I found that Taiwanese apples are easy to grow and care for. They only need to be planted at the beginning of the year and can be harvested at the end of the year.
From the third year, the tree has a stable yield of 30-35kg/tree. This year's apple crop has a stable selling price of 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, so far my family has earned over 300 million VND.
Like Mr. Tiem's family, Mr. Ly Van Duong's family in Bai Vang village has also grown Taiwanese apples for many years to develop the economy. Mr. Duong said: Each sao of land can usually grow 35-40 apple trees. Investing in apples is not expensive, in 1 year 1 apple tree only needs 35,000 VND (including chicken manure, manure, phosphate, potassium).
The harvest time is very favorable from December of the previous lunar year to February of the following lunar year. Especially, we only need to pick the apples and there are traders to buy them right there, no need to transport them to sell.

To contribute to improving the efficiency of Taiwanese apple growers in Bai Vang village, in recent years, the local government and the Department of Agriculture of Huu Lung district have also organized training courses on Taiwanese apple growing techniques according to VietGAP standards for the people.
Therefore, the quality of apples in Bai Vang village is always bright, delicious, crispy, sweet... and is very popular with customers in Lang Son, Bac Giang, and Hanoi.
Currently in Bai Vang village, there are 40 households growing Taiwanese apples, small households have 100-200 trees, large households have 700-800 trees.
According to local people's calculations, 100 Taiwanese apple trees bring in an income of 35-40 million VND/year, with economic efficiency 7-8 times higher than growing rice.

The technique for growing Taiwanese apples is also quite simple. If it is the first year, let the tree grow naturally and develop 2-3 buds. As for trees from the second year onwards, after harvesting the fruit, in the last month of the 2nd-3rd lunar month, use a saw to cut all the branches and cut the base (35-40cm from the ground). When the tree grows new buds, leave only 3-4 buds.
Then fertilize with chicken manure and manure for the plant to grow normally. In September-October, when the plant has small fruit the size of a finger, add potassium for sweet fruit.

In the coming term, we still determine that Taiwanese apple trees will be the main crop in local economic development.
