Mr. Nguyen Van Loan (born in 1962), Bai Truc street, Tan Phong town, said that his family has been raising and selling fish for generations. However, in the last months of the year, his family raises a few more ponds of red carp to sell before the Kitchen Gods' Tet holiday.

“With an area of over 3 hectares of ponds, this year, I leave nearly 1 hectare to raise red carp. Red carp are raised for about the last 3 months of the year. To keep the fish beautiful, I have to keep them from getting too big, the size of 2 to 3 fingers is just right,” said Mr. Loan.

With an area of nearly 1 hectare, this year, Mr. Loan's family harvested more than 2 tons of fish. With the current selling price of 150,000 VND/kg, his family estimates that they will earn more than 300 million VND, after deducting expenses, they will still make a profit of about half.

According to Mr. Loan, every year, fish prices only fluctuate from 100-120 thousand VND/kg. This year, because the northern provinces were affected by floods, there was no fish left, so traders came to buy a lot, so the selling price was also higher.

“Every year, my family only drains the pond to catch fish from the afternoon of the 20th to the morning of the 21st of the 12th lunar month. However, this year, traders from everywhere came to buy early, so my family had to drain the pond from the 15th and sell it for 150,000 VND/kg. Today, the price has increased to 170,000 VND/kg, and it is expected that the price will be even higher tomorrow,” said Mr. Loan.

Not far from Mr. Loan's house, Mr. Nguyen Van Son (born in 1963) and his wife are pulling nets to catch fish for customers. Mr. Son's family raises 2 ponds, expected to produce about 2 tons of fish. The current price (December 21) is 170,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Son, Tan Phong carp is popular because it has a bright red color, different from other places which have a dark red and pale color. Buyers believe that bright red fish represent a strong and healthy vitality to be able to take Ong Cong Ong Tao to heaven smoothly.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc (a trader, from Hau Loc district, Thanh Hoa) said that every year he goes to Tan Phong town to buy tons of red carp to re-import to the customers at the district market.

“I paid a deposit a month in advance with some pond owners at 140,000 VND/kg, which is 40,000 VND/kg higher than last year. It is expected that retail fish will also be much higher than previous years,” said Mr. Ngoc.
