Hanoi Four 12th grade students of Physics 1, Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, were admitted to Nanyang Technological University with ASEAN scholarships from the Singapore government.
Mr. Le Manh Cuong, homeroom teacher of Grade 12 Physics 1, said on March 20 that the four students are Do Quynh Anh, Nguyen An Loc, Pham The Minh and Vu Hoang Quoc Bao. In addition to tuition fees, the scholarship also includes living and housing expenses of 8,800 SGD (more than 150 million VND) a year, and about 1,750 SGD to buy a computer.
"This is the first time four students in the same class have received this scholarship," said Mr. Cuong.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is currently ranked 26th in the QS World University Rankings. The school is strong in engineering and technology, with tuition fees for international students ranging from SGD 20,000-37,000 per year.

According to Mr. Cuong, four students with academic achievements in the top group of the class all won prizes in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOA) in 2022 and 2023. In addition, Quynh Anh, The Minh and Quoc Bao all won second prize in the national Physics competition for excellent students.
The scholarship consists of two rounds of application and interview. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accepts applications from November 2023 to January this year. Applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a 300-word essay. However, international award winners are invited directly to the scholarship interview round, which takes place on the afternoon of March 19. A few hours later, they receive their admission results.
"At the end of the interview, the professors wished me a happy birthday and said they would see me at school. Two hours later, I received an email saying I had been awarded a scholarship," Loc said.
Bao was a bit surprised because the results came early but was happy because his goal had come true. Both Bao and Loc were admitted to the Computer Science major.
The two boys said they dreamed of studying abroad in Singapore since grade 10, so they planned early to get high scores, take the IELTS test, learn programming, participate in international competitions, and participate in extracurricular activities to have a good profile. The two friends both achieved IELTS 8.0, while Loc also has an SAT certificate (a standardized test, often used for admission to universities around the world) with 1530/1600 points and has a scientific article.
The interview round lasts about 10 minutes. Professors and members of the NTU admissions committee ask candidates about their plans for the four years of university and after graduation; reasons for choosing the university, major, and extracurricular activities they have participated in.
Singlish (Singaporean English) sometimes made Loc and Bao unable to understand clearly, so they had to ask the examiner to repeat the question. Thanks to going to the website to read information about the school and major as well as predicting and practicing answering the questions, Loc answered confidently.

Bao said that each person has their own path to win a scholarship such as international awards, A-level exams (Singapore's high school graduation exam), but the most important thing is to know your strengths to develop. The admissions committee will look at the whole process and appreciate your progress.
As for Loc, honesty in the application is what makes the school impressed with the candidate. "You also need to have a clear plan and backup plan in every situation," Loc concluded.
The students will leave for Singapore to enroll next July.
The ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship, for students from Southeast Asian countries, is funded by the Ministry of Education of Singapore and is offered to six public universities for selection. NUT requires applicants to have an A-level qualification, excellent academic performance, and strong leadership qualities. Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5/5 and stay and work for Singaporean companies for three years after graduation.
