Overview of the meeting

On behalf of the Swedish Embassy in Vietnam, there was Ms. Marie-Louise Thaning, Counselor, Head of the Economic and Political Trade Promotion Department. Also attending were 10 Swedish lecturers from the "Advanced Training in Vietnamese Journalism" Project.

There are also journalists who are former students of the Project and are currently living in Hanoi.

The project has contributed to building a professional, humane and modern Vietnamese press.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam expressed his deep gratitude to the people and Government of Sweden, and the International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for giving Vietnam valuable financial resources to carry out an unprecedented project: a 16-year project to improve the capacity of Vietnamese journalists and press agencies.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam expressed his honor to welcome former Swedish experts, lecturers and journalists of the project "Advanced training in Vietnamese journalism". These are teachers and friends of many generations of Vietnamese journalists and leaders of the project through the ages, leaders of Vietnamese journalism.

The Deputy Minister affirmed that this is an opportunity to honor the fine traditions of the Vietnamese people, which are the tradition of respecting teachers, the morality of remembering the source of water when drinking, and the story of gratitude.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam expressed his deep gratitude to the people and Government of Sweden, and the International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for giving Vietnam valuable financial resources to carry out an unprecedented project: a 16-year project to improve the capacity of journalists and press agencies in Vietnam.

He also expressed his sincere thanks to former Swedish experts in the field of journalism and media and former leaders of the Swedish Academy for Advanced Journalism (FOJO), with 10 outstanding representatives present at today's meeting. These are people who have devoted their hearts and minds to training and improving the qualifications of thousands of Vietnamese reporters and journalists over the years.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam emphasized that more than 10 years after the Vietnam Journalism Capacity Building Training Project ended, the project's good values ​​continue to be maintained and developed. The good results from the project are a professional, humane, and modern Vietnamese journalism.

The story of the SIDA, FOJO project is a story of friendship, respect, gratitude and the opportunity to learn from each other. Let's continue to write the next chapters of this exceptionally good partnership, the Deputy Minister expressed.

Sharing at the meeting, Ms. Marie-Louise Thaning, Counselor, Head of Trade, Economic and Political Promotion Department of the Embassy of Sweden in Vietnam, said that 2024 is an important milestone to celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Sweden. Sweden is the first Western country to establish relations with Vietnam. At the same time, Sweden is also the first and largest sponsor to support and participate in Vietnam's media sector during the most difficult period.

Ms. Marie-Louise Thaning said that in the 2000s, journalism cooperation between Vietnam and Sweden reached its peak with the training of 8,000 local journalists through courses in Vietnam and Sweden, accounting for about 50% of the number of journalists working at that time.

It is this partnership that has led to people-to-people exchanges that go beyond our programmes. And today, these human connections enrich our friendship and strengthen the relationship between our two countries, shared Ms. Marie-Louise Thaning.

She also expressed her deep gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam for the excellent cooperation and continuous collaboration and believed that the two sides would together build a bright future for Vietnamese media.

Mr. Do Quy Doan, former Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, shared that the "Advanced Training for Vietnamese Journalism" project has contributed to improving the quality of journalism and modern journalism skills for Vietnamese journalism.

Sharing at the meeting, Mr. Do Quy Doan, former Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, who directly directed the project in all stages, emotionally recalled the arduous but glorious journey of implementing the Project. Mr. Do Quy Doan expressed his gratitude to the Swedish people, SIDA, and Project lecturers for their enthusiastic support of the Vietnamese press, contributing to improving the quality of journalism and modern journalism skills for the Vietnamese press.

Ms. Anneli Ewers, Director of FOJO Journalism Training Institute

Ms. Anneli Ewers, Director of FOJO Journalism Training Institute, shared her feelings when recalling the journey of cooperation in training Vietnamese journalists. She said that since 1996, FOJO has welcomed the first Vietnamese journalists to participate in the program, starting the project of training modern journalism skills for thousands of Vietnamese journalists. After more than 10 years, the project officially ended, we are here to witness the good results that the project has achieved with the strong development of Vietnamese press and media.

Mr. Clas Thor also expressed his honor to be present at today's meeting and witness the positive results of the "Advanced Training in Vietnamese Journalism" project. He commented that the world press in general and Vietnam in particular are currently facing many major changes, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the challenges from the problem of fake news.

In 1997, the project "Advanced training in Vietnamese journalism" was implemented under a cooperation program between the Vietnamese Government and the Swedish Government. The project was implemented based on the experience of the advanced training model for journalism of the Swedish Institute for Advanced Journalism (FOJO) with funding from the Swedish Government through the Swedish Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
