Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an indispensable part of business operations in Belgium.
According to the latest figures from the European statistical agency (Eurostat), published by Acerta Consult, nearly a quarter (24.7%) of Belgian businesses with more than 10 employees are currently using AI applications in their operations.
This figure marks a staggering leap, with growth of nearly 80% in just one year, placing Belgium third in the ranking of European countries with the highest AI adoption rate, behind only Denmark and Sweden.
Not only technology giants, but also small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Belgium are rapidly adopting AI.
“Last year, AI use increased by 10 percentage points among small businesses, by 13 percentage points among medium-sized businesses, and by 18 percentage points among large businesses,” said Melina Krantz, innovation expert at Acerta Consult.
This growth is attributed to Belgium's strong knowledge economy, as well as fierce competition in European and global markets.
The service industry remains the leading sector for AI adoption (27.4%), but other sectors such as manufacturing (23%) and construction (10%) are also showing significant growth.
The most popular AI applications include text mining (15.1%), automatic text generation, and automation of repetitive tasks.
However, the application of AI also poses significant challenges. 25% of businesses expect to cut their workforce due to automation, while 30% believe that employees need to be retrained to adapt to new technology.
“Workers need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to use AI effectively and safely,” says expert Melina Krantz. The European Union’s AI Regulation came into effect on August 1, 2024, imposing stricter rules on data privacy, transparency, and AI auditing.
Belgian businesses need to comply with these regulations and ensure that AI is used responsibly.
According to expert Melina Krantz, AI should not be an end in itself, but a tool to improve efficiency and create added value. Businesses need to choose AI applications that suit their needs and goals.
As AI becomes increasingly popular, balancing benefits and risks is essential to ensure the sustainable development of the Belgian economy./.
