This trick, which has been warned in many countries, has recently been given special attention by the National Payment Systems Corporation of India (NPCI) because criminals take advantage of users' trust to steal OTP codes and appropriate assets through online transactions.

Accordingly, the scammer will directly call the victim, pretending to be a friend and claiming to have obtained the phone number through a mutual friend. The name of this mutual friend is often found in the victim's social network friend list. Next, they will ask the victim to "merge the call" with the other friend, which is actually a fake call from the bank asking for an OTP code. When the victim agrees to participate in the merged call, the scammer can easily collect the OTP code and make unauthorized transactions on the victim's bank account.

In this situation, the Information Security Department recommends that users should be more vigilant. When receiving calls from unknown numbers, be cautious and verify the caller's identity through friends or relatives. Absolutely do not follow any instructions from suspicious calls, especially do not provide personal information or transfer money to unknown sources.

To proactively prevent this, users should use scam call detection applications such as nTrust, Truecaller or Calls Blacklist to quickly identify and prevent these sophisticated scams. Always be vigilant and protect your personal information to avoid becoming a victim of increasingly sophisticated scams.
