The delegation was led by Mr. Aron Emilsson, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and included seven members of parliament and officials from the committee's secretariat.

The Swedish Parliament is responsible for legislation, ensuring that the legal framework is up to date and effective.

During the visit, the delegation will meet with key officials and partners in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to discuss bilateral relations, explore the impressive economic development and future potential for cooperation with Vietnam. Discussions will focus on strategic areas such as science, technology and innovation, reflecting the shared vision of Sweden and Vietnam in addressing global challenges and creating opportunities for sustainable development. In addition, the delegation will connect with representatives of over 70 Swedish companies currently operating in Vietnam across a range of sectors.

The Swedish Parliament and the National Assembly of Vietnam have established a long-term partnership since 1998, moving from aid-funded projects to equal cooperation. Over the years, this cooperation has introduced elements of the Swedish governance model, including the establishment of a petition and oversight committee (Swedish Ombudsman) and the organization of youth forums, notably a youth meeting with the Vietnamese National Assembly in Hanoi in 2006. In addition, efforts have been made to improve the dissemination of public information, and special cooperation between female parliamentarians of the two countries has flourished. These initiatives have contributed to increasing the number of full-time Vietnamese parliamentarians and facilitated regular exchanges between the two parliaments.

This remains the most extensive and special cooperation the Swedish Parliament has ever undertaken with a parliament of another country.

The Swedish Parliament, also known as the Riksdag, is a unicameral legislature with 349 members elected every four years. The Riksdag is responsible for making laws, supervising the government, deciding on the state budget, and approving foreign policy. The Foreign Affairs Committee, an important part of the Riksdag, is responsible for shaping Sweden's foreign policy, including issues related to international relations, development cooperation, and foreign economic affairs. The Committee also oversees the Riksdag's preparations for EU-related issues, such as treaty amendments, the admission of new members, and cooperation with third countries.

The visit of the delegation of the Swedish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee to Vietnam underlines Sweden’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral partnership. With a long history of cooperation, Sweden and Vietnam continue to reaffirm their commitment to deepening this relationship, with a particular focus on science, technology and innovation, paving the way for a strategic partnership that will bring long-term benefits to both countries.
