On the morning of November 12, at the National Convention Center, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training held a ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the capital's education and training sector (1954 - 2024) and the 42nd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20, 1982 - November 20, 2024).
Hanoi education is a mirror reflecting the growth of the capital.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, recalled the images of a difficult but vibrant and enthusiastic Hanoi with popular education classes to eradicate illiteracy.
At that time, Hanoi had only 96 primary schools and 4 secondary schools. These schools only met the needs of 20% of the children going to school, so 80% of children - mainly children of the working class - were illiterate, and nearly 90% of Hanoians were illiterate. Preschool education was also "immature", with only 3 preschools with 254 children.
In conditions of lack of teachers, lack of schools, lack of facilities for learning, classes are still organized simply and cozy.
Mr. Cuong said it can be said that the development of Hanoi's education over the 70-year journey of tradition is also a mirror reflecting the growth of the capital.
Currently, Hanoi's educational scale accounts for over 10% of the country's educational scale with nearly 3,000 educational institutions at all levels, about 130,000 teachers, and nearly 2.3 million students. Hanoi is also home to 120 universities and colleges with nearly 1 million students.
Up to now, the entire education sector of the capital has nearly 130,000 teachers of all levels and fields of study; 342 teachers have been awarded the titles "People's Teacher" and "Excellent Teacher" by the President.
Statistics from 2008 to 2024 show that Hanoi students won nearly 2,200 prizes at national excellent student competitions and 200 medals at international competitions.
According to Mr. Cuong, this is an important resource for Hanoi to innovate and improve the quality of education and training in a practical, effective and progressive manner, joining hands for the development of a creative city and a global learning city.

"The entire education and training sector of the capital today will continue to promote the fine traditions of Hanoi's revolutionary history and the traditional history of the sector over the past 70 years, always remembering and determined to carry out President Ho Chi Minh's teachings: "No matter how difficult it is, we must continue to compete to teach well and study well", doing our best to serve the country and the people.
Determined to implement the direction of Comrade To Lam - General Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, striving to develop the education and training career in the new era - the era of national advancement.
In which, people are taken as the center, the subject, the goal, the driving force and the resource of development; paying attention to the issues of time, intelligence, aspiration, potential, and integration to bring education and training to the same level, keeping up with developed countries with the spirit of autonomy, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-strengthening, and national pride," Mr. Cuong emphasized.

Capital education must aim for an elegant education.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Kim Son - Minister of Education and Training - emphasized that the capital's education and training sector has always been one of the pioneering units, leading in all tasks of the entire sector.
According to the minister, the capital's education faces high demands, high requirements, high standards, in exemplary, pioneering, top quality and is an example, a model for education nationwide.
Therefore, what the capital's education has achieved and been recognized for in the past time needs to be calculated exponentially and with added value in all recognition and evaluation.
According to the minister, in the comprehensive development of human beings, the capital's education needs to aim higher than the general requirements of the whole country, aiming to educate and create elegant citizens of the capital, with cultural stature, social responsibility and knowing how to live happily for themselves and for the community.
They are citizens with high cultural qualities, with skills in science and technology, civilized and elegant citizens of the digital age, good at expertise and good at foreign languages.
The Minister believes that to achieve the above goal, the capital's education system must aim for an elegant education system. In which, schools must be elegant schools, teachers and students must be elegant.
"There, schools must be places where students are guaranteed safety, no school violence, no swearing, no forced extra classes.
There, social evils are avoided and there exists a typical cultural school environment. Most importantly, there people treat each other with love and responsibility.
"To have an elegant education system, it is necessary to implement well the culture of education and cultural education. The elegance of education can be completely built on the good achievements we have had," the minister emphasized.
According to the minister, the education sector needs to focus on solving urgent issues such as reducing the gap in education quality between regions and schools; reducing the gap between key education results and mass education so that students in any region, school, or class can access the best educational environment and quality.
In addition, it is necessary to better resolve the relationships between school and society, school and locality, teachers and parents... to create an educational environment with proper order, where the quality of education is guaranteed, the dignity of the teaching profession is respected, and teachers are exemplary and students are exemplary.
"Being a teacher is a noble and honorable job, and teachers in the capital are even more honored and proud. On the occasion of the Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, on behalf of the leaders of the education and training sector, I would like to send my best thanks and congratulations to all teachers.
I would like to express my deep pride in you, teachers. I wish you always find joy in your work and always be happy with your career," said the minister.
