Ben Tre announces geographical indications for 7 key products

Seven key products have just been announced as geographical indications by Ben Tre province, including: giant freshwater prawn, clam, sea crab, durian, rambutan, mango and rice.

On the morning of June 14, within the framework of the 27th Mekong Delta Science and Technology Conference, Ben Tre province announced geographical indications and performed the geographical indication labeling ceremony for 7 key products.

Accordingly, up to now, Ben Tre province has been granted geographical indication certificates by the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) for 9 products including: green coconut, green-skinned grapefruit, durian, rambutan, four-season mango, sea crab, green-legged shrimp, clams and rice. Thereby, Ben Tre is the province with 9 geographical indications in the top group of the country in terms of geographical indication protection. Of these, geographical indications for green coconut and green-skinned grapefruit were announced by Ben Tre province in 2018. Ben Tre province is also building geographical indications for 4 more products.

Through geographical indication protection, local products are raised in consumer choice, exploitation and promotion also become more convenient and easier, attracting investment in promoting Ben Tre tourism for the area with that product.

Currently, Ben Tre is prioritizing investment in agricultural projects, especially high-tech agriculture, aiming to build the province into a reliable address for research and transfer of agricultural production techniques to farmers and businesses. Therefore, product quality plays an important role for businesses and farmers, and geographical indications are the best way to protect product characteristics, protect clear origin as well as stable quality.
