In Ban Lau commune, Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province – the largest pineapple growing area in the district – ripe yellow pineapples are being bought by traders at high prices. The pineapple harvest usually takes place from December of the previous year to April of the following year.
In previous years, high fertilizer prices coupled with export difficulties caused many pineapple farmers to suffer losses and hesitate to expand production. However, since last year, consumption has stabilized, helping farmers make a profit and feel more secure in their cultivation. Currently, pineapples sell for around 6,000 VND/kg at the farm, while the price at processing plants is 8,000 VND/kg or higher. With these prices, people are earning a good income and are expanding their cultivated area, adding about 200 hectares compared to last year.
