The Republican National Convention, held on July 15 (local time) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA), approved the 2024 Platform, which includes changes on a number of domestic and foreign issues.
New points in the platform
On domestic issues, the platform addresses the Republican Party’s shift in stance on abortion regulation, one of the most controversial issues in the United States. Accordingly, the Republican Party abandons its long-standing support for abortion restrictions, allowing states to set their own regulations on the issue. In addition, the platform also drops its opposition to same-sex marriage.
This year’s platform, however, uses stronger language on a number of issues, including immigration and education. It also reflects Donald Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, with a pledge to close the border, stop migrants, and carry out the largest deportation operation ever. On the economy, the Republican platform pledges to cut regulations, cut taxes, end inflation, and “make America the world’s dominant energy producer.”
The Republican Party pledges to prevent World War III and restore peace in Europe and the Middle East, strengthen alliances by ensuring allies meet their obligations to contribute to the common defense, and stand with Israel. However, the platform makes no mention of climate or clean energy.
Young senators running for office
Also at the opening of the national convention, the Republican Party officially nominated former President Donald Trump as its candidate for the presidential election scheduled to take place on November 5. This is the third consecutive time the Republican Party has chosen Mr. Donald Trump as its presidential candidate. With one ear carefully bandaged, Mr. Donald Trump was warmly welcomed at the convention. This was his first public appearance since the assassination attempt while campaigning in Pennsylvania on July 13.
Previously, Mr. Donald Trump also announced his decision to choose Ohio's young Senator, JDVance, to run for vice president. Senator JD Vance, full name James David Vance, was born in 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. Mr. JDVance graduated from Ohio University, Yale Law School and served in the US Marine Corps in Iraq. He was elected Senator representing Ohio in 2022 and began his term in January 2023.
Regarding the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump, CBS News reported that the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are still concerned about the possibility of further acts of violence or retaliation. On the same day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken summoned senior officials at the State Department to ask them to send a message around the world about Washington's commitment to the rule of law and that the country will not tolerate violence.
