On May 11, the Ben Hai River Basin Protective Forest Management Board confirmed that it had requested the People's Committee of Linh Truong Commune and the Linh Truong Commune Police (Gio Linh District, Quang Tri) to handle the case of destroying the protective forest.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung, in 2019, this unit organized the planting of protective forests in sub-area 598T (Linh Truong commune) on an area of 50 hectares. By 2020, people in Vinh O commune (Vinh Linh district) came to destroy the protective forests in the above sub-area, then encroached to plant acacia with a total area of 6.8 hectares, causing damage of about 136 million VND. Although the detection was quite timely, the handling by the authorities was not drastic, so it could not be prevented.

Then, on May 13, 2020, the Forest Protection Management Station of Sub-area 604T under the Ben Hai River Basin Forest Protection Management Board inspected the forest at Lot 3, Block 4, Sub-area 598T. Here, 2 locations of protective forests were discovered to be cut down with an area of 0.9 ha. In addition to the above location, the destruction of protective forests to plant Acacia also occurred in Lot 5k, Lot 8F, Block 4, Sub-area 598T...
During the investigation, it was determined that 8 households in Xa Loi and Xa Nin villages in Vinh O commune (Vinh Linh district) had cut down protective forests and then encroached on land to plant acacia, but these 8 households did not agree to return the land.
“We request the People’s Committee of Linh Truong Commune and the Linh Truong Commune Police to request the 8 households to clear all the acacia trees planted on 6.8 hectares of land, and hand over the land for us to manage and use according to regulations. At the same time, force the households to compensate for the destroyed protective forest area of 136 million VND. In case the people still do not comply, the unit will prepare documents to file a lawsuit in court,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung, Director of the Ben Hai River Basin Protective Forest Management Board.
