Three areas of the body that are prone to injury when working out at the gym

Shoulders, knees and lower back are susceptible to serious injury if gym goers do not perform the exercises correctly.

Gym is one of the most popular forms of exercise because it brings many health benefits and improves body shape quickly. However, gym requires high technique. Practitioners who do not perform the correct technique are very susceptible to injury. At a serious level, injury can affect long-term motor function later.

Master, Doctor, Doctor Dao Duy An Duy, Orthopedic Trauma Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the shoulder, waist and knee joints are the most common injuries when working out at the gym. These injuries can occur when performing strength exercises with complex techniques such as squats, deadlifts, pull-ups... because maximum stretching and tension are required to stimulate muscle growth.

Common shoulder injuries during gym workouts include rotator cuff tendon injuries, biceps tendonitis, and even brachial plexus injuries.

When performing exercises that impact the upper body muscle groups incorrectly, the muscle fibers are not stretched and stretched properly or move in the wrong direction. This causes the nerves to be overstretched, leading to injury. Shoulder joint injuries are highly likely to cause loss of hand function, and patients need to be treated surgically soon.

Lumbar spine injuries are common in weightlifters. The heavier the weight, the higher the risk of injury. Because lifting weights with the wrong posture, not tightening the core muscles creates great pressure on the lumbar vertebrae L4, L5. This increases the risk of sudden lumbar spine injury or worsening existing lumbar disc degeneration.

Knee injuries can occur when performing lower body strength exercises or complex jumping and twisting movements. However, low-intensity exercises such as walking, cycling, etc. can also damage the meniscus and articular cartilage if practiced incorrectly or excessively. In the long term, the practitioner faces knee instability or, more seriously, osteoarthritis.

Some other knee injuries that can occur include anterior or posterior cruciate ligament damage, meniscus tear, knee dislocation...

Gym injuries can occur suddenly or be the result of a cumulative process, causing serious health problems and impaired motor function.

To protect the body, Dr. Duy recommends that practitioners tighten their core muscles to protect the spine and the muscles around the waist; do not lock the knees in all movements. Perform controlled movements; understand the technique of each exercise before performing; do not use weights that are too heavy for the body to control. Have a reasonable exercise and rest regimen, see a doctor if you feel pain or have other abnormalities.
