Apple will show a pre-recorded video featuring company executives and stream it live on YouTube and the Apple website. The 2022 event will last about an hour and a half. Apple began using pre-recorded videos to introduce products in 2020.
September events are typically a warm-up for the fourth quarter, the busiest shopping season of the year. A year ago, 31 million people watched Apple’s YouTube video, showing that people still want to hear directly from the company.
This year, Apple hopes the new iPhone can stem a sales decline in the face of renewed pressure from Huawei and convince Android users to switch.
Below are the products and services expected to launch at Apple's September 12 Wonderlust event:
iPhone 15
Apple is expected to launch four new iPhone models, continuing the tradition from 2020. If nothing changes, the iPhone 15 family includes two regular 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch Plus models, two high-end models, the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch 15 Pro Max. The Pro version uses a titanium frame and better cameras, according to Bloomberg.
The biggest change this year on the iPhone 15 lineup is the USB-C charging port, replacing the proprietary Lightning port that has been in place since 2012. This means the iPhone will share the same charging port as Android phones, new laptops, iPads, wireless headphones, and other devices. The change was hastened by new European Union regulations.
The titanium frame also replaces the stainless steel frame, which is lighter, helping to reduce the iPhone's weight. Meanwhile, the regular iPhone 15 gets an upgrade and comes with Dynamic Island dynamic range, which provides real-time updates of apps. The mute switch may have a new function.
Apple also tends to focus on improving the chip and camera. The most expensive iPhone model, the 15 Pro Max or 15 Ultra, will have a new lens that can zoom twice as fast as the 3x zoom lens on the iPhone 15 Pro, according to Bloomberg.
One question that remains open is whether Apple will raise prices. Some analysts believe this will happen because of rising costs for components like memory and chips. Apple did not raise the price of the iPhone 14 in the US last year despite similar issues, but adjusted its global prices in response to currency fluctuations.
Apple Watch
In 2022, Apple will launch the Watch Series 8 and a new high-end titanium model called the Ultra. Both will be updated this year, but they typically don’t get as many major year-over-year changes as the iPhone. The company’s popular watches have the same size and style since 2018.
Apple is expected to update the chip in the new watch as well as the health sensors, but it seems the “bitten apple” will save the bigger changes for the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch next year.
iOS 17
Apple announced iOS 17 at its June developer conference, but it won't be available to everyone until September. Many of the new features in iOS 17 don't require an iPhone 15 and apply to all iPhones from 2018 onwards.
Some of the notable features of iOS 17 include a refreshed Caller ID screen, auto-correction based on a large language model, a Journal app for note-taking, a standby mode that turns the phone into a clock with widgets that display alarms, calendar appointments, and Apple offline maps.
