According to the Indonesian Ministry of Communications, the country's authorities have just granted telecommunications licenses to five different models of Apple's iPhone 16, a move towards allowing the "Apple" company to distribute products in the archipelago after the ban.
The licensing comes a week after Indonesia granted local content certificates to 20 Apple products, including the iPhone 16.
Indonesia has just granted telecommunications licenses for five different models of Apple's iPhone 16, a move towards allowing the "Apple" company to distribute products in the archipelago after the ban.
The Southeast Asian nation of about 280 million people banned sales of the iPhone 16 last year because the company failed to meet component requirements for locally produced parts. Analysts said the rules could hurt investor confidence and raise concerns about protectionism.
5 telecommunications certificates have just been issued by the Indonesian government for iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The licensing follows last month's announcement of more than $300 million in investment by Apple in Indonesia, including factories to make components for its products and a research and development center.
Dwi Handoko, a senior official at the communications ministry, said five licenses were granted at Apple's request. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
Oracle Corp. is in talks with the Indonesian government to set up a cloud services center on the country’s Batam island, Bloomberg reported. Batam’s Nongsa Digital Park is favored as a location given its “free trade zone” status and proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, where Oracle has plans for a similar cloud services business.
In early October 2024, Oracle announced plans to invest more than $6.5 billion to establish its first public cloud region in Malaysia. The company also plans to continue expanding across Asia, with more data centers and infrastructure projects planned from Japan to New Zealand… all the way to India.
Oracle previously had two cloud facilities in Singapore and now has 50 public cloud regions across 24 countries.
