Pressure to be the best student in class causes psychological disorder in girl

On June 19, Dr. Ngo Anh Vinh, Deputy Head of the Department of Adolescent Health, National Children's Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital at the end of May in a state of depression, anxiety, fear, prolonged insomnia, and inability to concentrate on studying.

According to her family, she was gentle, obedient, and a good student. However, due to the pressure of having to be at the top of her class to be on the school's gifted student team, she had to work very hard. The prolonged stress made her afraid to go to school, stressed, unable to sleep, and her academic performance declined.

Dr. Vinh diagnosed the patient with a psychological disorder related to intense academic pressure. This condition is also common in many students.

In 2022, the Department of Adolescent Health studied psychological disorders in students at several secondary schools in Hanoi. The results showed that 38% of the children studied showed signs of anxiety, 33% were stressed, and 26% were depressed.

According to Dr. Vinh, among the children who come to the National Children's Hospital for examination and treatment due to depression and stress, many are considered well-behaved and have good academic performance. These children often put pressure on themselves, constantly trying to maintain their image with friends, family, and teachers. This makes children susceptible to stress, anxiety, fatigue, and depression, especially when they do not meet their expectations.

The causes of the above disorders are often too much knowledge, children not preparing well for exams, unstable psychology and pressure from school and parents.

Signs of a child with a mental disorder are unusual behavior and emotions such as irritability or crying for no reason, fatigue, boredom, not communicating with others; the child has symptoms of insomnia or sleeping too much, loss of appetite, and refusal to eat. Physical symptoms such as stomachache, headache, chest pain, rapid heartbeat; excessive anxiety, always in a state of tension and excitement.

Dr. Vinh believes that parents should not set too high expectations, unintentionally creating great pressure on their children. Parents should clearly understand their children's abilities and strengths to set goals, choose the right school and class. Parents need to listen to their children's thoughts and wishes to advise and guide them properly, helping them relieve pressure from studying and taking exams.

Like the girl above, the doctor gave her psychological counseling, medication to treat the symptoms, then the family transferred her to another school, changing her living environment to reduce the pressure on her. Now the girl has been discharged from the hospital, her psychology is stable, and her anxiety disorder is gone.
