High Income from Wilderness
When people were not interested in farming and left their fields fallow for many years, Mr. Tran Huu Phuong, Hong An commune (Hung Ha, Thai Binh) decided to rent 15 hectares of land to grow medicinal plants. He grew many types of plants such as wormwood, ginseng... to extract essential oils and supply sophora flowers to pharmaceutical companies.
When the medicinal herb garden was growing well and earning about 6 million VND/sao, an incident happened and he lost everything. Undaunted, in 2018 he switched to livestock farming and dedicated 2 hectares of land to growing longan.
Mr. Phuong shared: I have invested about 5 - 6 billion VND to build barns and buy breeding animals. Currently, I have 4 barns raising 300 pigs and 80 3B cows. In addition, I also grow sweet grass and corn to proactively provide food for livestock.
Thanks to bold investment and active application of science and technology in livestock and crop farming, Mr. Phuong's model has been maintained stably and has generated high income. Mr. Tran Huu Tuan, Chairman of the Hong An Commune Gardening Association, commented: Mr. Phuong is one of the typical members who dares to think and dare to do. Although the land has been fallow for many years and is difficult to cultivate, he has improved it very well. Not only has he enriched his family, but he has also helped 10 workers have regular jobs with stable income, contributing to the development of the local socio-economy.
The VAC model of Ms. Le Thi Thuy, Dong Xa commune (Dong Hung, Thai Binh) has high economic efficiency.
Raising chickens and fish brings in hundreds of millions of dong in profit
Joining us to visit the VAC economic model of Ms. Le Thi Thuy's family in Dong Xa commune (Dong Hung), Mr. Ha Van Tuyen, Chairman of the Commune Gardening Association, said: Currently, the locality has many members participating in developing the VAC economy, but the models are still small. Ms. Thuy is an active person, willing to learn and invest methodically, so the model brings high economic efficiency.
Ms. Thuy's land is currently a flooded field, with low efficiency for rice cultivation. In 2014, her family invested 1.6 billion VND to renovate it with an area of 7,000m2. She set aside about 1 acre to dig a pond to raise grass carp fry, 2 sao to build a coop to raise sugarcane chickens, and the rest to grow locust trees.
“With the support of the government and the Commune Gardening Association, I have been able to access loans and attend technical training courses to develop the model. The chicken coop I built ensures ventilation standards, creates a comfortable living space and prevents diseases for the chickens. In 2023 alone, I will sell about 6 tons of chicken meat, 6 tons of fish fry, earning a profit of about 250 million VND,” Ms. Thuy shared.
Having worked at Ms. Thuy's farm for many years, Ms. Vu Thi Luyen, from Dong Binh Cach village, happily said: I am over 50 years old this year, so I cannot work at companies. Since Ms. Thuy created conditions for me, my 3-4 sisters and I have had jobs during the off-season. The work is not too hard, and we have extra income to support our family.
VAC model of Mr. Mai Cong Phuong, Hong Dung commune (Thai Thuy, Thai Binh).
VAC 7-acre farm owner
We met Mr. Mai Cong Phuong on the dike road of Hong Dung commune (Thai Thuy) to learn about his way of getting rich. Looking at his appearance and simple dress, no one would think that this cow herder is the owner of the 7-acre VAC farm. Everything in the farm was designed and installed by Mr. Phuong himself, from the automatic watering system for ducks to the flooring system.
Mr. Phuong shared: Previously, my family's ducks often got sick due to traditional farming methods. In the past 2 years, I invested 130 million VND in stainless steel floors, automatic feeding systems and applied new farming techniques in a closed process. This helped solve the problem of barn hygiene, the ducks were not only healthy but also shortened the farming time from 2.5 months to 45 days. Therefore, each year I can sell about 8,000 commercial ducks to traders.
According to Mr. Phuong, by maintaining the raising of about 2,500 ducks, 14 cows and 4 ponds for raising various types of fish, he earns a profit of over 300 million VND/year. Evaluating the effectiveness of the model, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hung, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hong Dung Commune, said: To achieve this success, member Mai Cong Phuong actively participated in training courses, technology transfer, and field trips organized by the locality. Based on the knowledge he learned, he cleverly created and flexibly applied it to his model. In addition, he is always willing to provide technical guidance and share experiences with members in the commune to get rich together.
Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Gardening Association, assessed: In recent years, the VAC economic development movement in the whole province has seen many improvements. Members have actively transformed the structure of crops and livestock, moving towards concentrated commodity production, developing agricultural economy associated with developing eco-tourism. Thanks to that, more and more good models and new ways of doing things with high economic efficiency have appeared, contributing to improving the lives of members.
Many individuals and groups were awarded certificates of merit by the Central Vietnam Gardening Association and the Provincial Gardening Association for their outstanding achievements in the VAC economic development movement. In the coming time, the Provincial Gardening Association will continue to do a good job in supporting loans, transferring science and technology, organizing vocational training, training to improve professional skills for members and accompanying members to build and replicate organic garden models and VAC 4.0 farms, contributing to the successful implementation of the province's socio-economic development goals.
