Xinhua News Agency quoted a report released today, October 1, by the country's Anti-Narcotics Bureau showing that about 51% of suspects were drug traffickers, producers and transporters, while the rest were drug users.

“A total of 2.68 tonnes of illicit drugs and approximately 911 kg of raw materials were seized between January and September 2023,” the report said.

Most of the drugs seized were ketamine, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, methamphetamine, crystal methamphetamine and cathinone.

Compared to the same period last year, Cambodia has seen a sharp increase in drug arrests, but a decrease in the amount of drugs seized. In the first nine months of 2022, authorities arrested 11,431 drug suspects and confiscated 6.25 tons of drugs.

Cambodia does not have the death penalty for drug trafficking. Under the Southeast Asian country’s law, people convicted of trafficking more than 80 grams of illegal drugs can be sentenced to life in prison.

In another development in neighboring Thailand, according to AP, police in this country have just seized a quantity of drugs considered the largest ever recorded in a campaign in this country, and arrested 4 suspects in a raid in Nakhon Pathom province.

The seized drugs included 15 million methamphetamine pills, 443 heroin bricks, 420 kg of crystal methamphetamine and a quantity of party drugs, including “happy water” and “five-five”.
