Ordering 2 boxes of Thai ruby grapefruit for 2 million VND/box, Ms. Doan Minh Chuyen in Yen Lang (Dong Da, Hanoi) said that these grapefruits are for Tet gifts.
She shared that the ruby grapefruit has a smooth green skin and feels very firm in the hand. The red flesh is quite eye-catching, the segments are juicy and sweet, and have no or few seeds. Compared to ruby grapefruit grown in Vietnam, Thai products have superior quality.
Ms. Chuyen chose to buy grade 1 ruby grapefruit, weighing 2kg/fruit for 400,000 VND/fruit. Because gifts are prioritized for beautiful designs and good quality, even though the price is a bit expensive, she still chose to buy it.
Ms. Pham Thi Thu An also chose to buy ruby grapefruit for Tet worship and as gifts. However, she had to ask a third store to buy the amount of grapefruit she needed. The previous two stores both shook their heads and refused because they were "out of stock", overloaded with orders and could not accept more.
Talking to PV. VietNamNet , Ms. Nguyen Thi Van - a wholesaler of imported fruits in Tay Ho (Hanoi) - said that 3 days ago she received a batch of 1,500 Thai ruby grapefruits. All of these grapefruits were to pay for previous orders.
In the past two days, she has been selling ruby grapefruit on her store's Facebook page, and the number of customers ordering has increased sharply due to the peak of Tet shopping season.
“Today, I estimated that the number of grapefruits ordered by customers has reached 600. However, the goods will not arrive until the day after tomorrow so we can divide the orders to deliver to customers,” she said.
In Ho Chi Minh City, employees at Mr. Chu Van Minh's fruit store also had to refuse many customers who ordered Thai ruby grapefruit because it was "out of stock".
He said that the red-fleshed ruby grapefruit the store is selling comes from Nakhon Si Thammarat province in southern Thailand. The grapefruit weighs 1-2kg/fruit. He imports grade 1 products weighing 1.8-2kg/fruit mainly to serve the needs of buying as gifts and for Tet worship. Therefore, the selling price is also more expensive than grapefruits with smaller weights.
Previously, he had planned to import 5,000 grapefruits to sell during the Tet holiday. However, by the 18th of December, all the fruits were sold out. This was the reason why the store staff had to repeatedly refuse customers who ordered ruby grapefruits.
According to Mr. Minh, in our country, many gardeners also grow ruby grapefruit. The price of Vietnamese grapefruit is 1/4 cheaper, but customers are not interested because the quality and appearance of Thai ruby grapefruit are much better than Vietnamese products.
“I just imported 1,000 more Thai ruby grapefruits, they will arrive tomorrow,” he shared. However, Minh expects these grapefruits to be sold out in just a few days. However, this is the last batch, he will not import more because he plans to focus on selling Vietnamese fruits to display on the five-fruit tray near Tet.
In fact, in our country, grapefruit is the main fruit tree, with an output of more than 1 million tons/year. Of which, green-skin grapefruit, Dien grapefruit, red grapefruit, and Nam Roi grapefruit are popular grapefruit varieties with large yields. Ruby grapefruit has just been tested by gardeners, with a modest yield and unstable quality.
On the Tet market, Vietnamese grapefruit prices are quite cheap. For example, green-skin grapefruit costs from 25,000 to 40,000 VND/fruit depending on the type; Dien grapefruit costs from 15,000 to 50,000 VND/fruit, Tan Lac red grapefruit costs from 15,000 to 20,000 VND/fruit; ruby grapefruit costs from 20,000 to 50,000 VND/fruit...
Currently, grapefruit is entering the peak consumption season of Tet. This is one of the fruits chosen by many families to display on the Tet fruit tray.
