3 Preventable Causes of Gout Pain

Gout attacks often occur after meals rich in protein, due to three main causes. During Tet, you should pay attention to foods that help prevent and control these attacks.

Gout causes inflammation and severe pain.

According to the National Institute of Nutrition, gout is a type of arthritis that often has a sudden onset, causing swelling, pain, and inflammation of the joints. Symptoms of the disease occur when there is too much uric acid in the blood. When uric acid levels are high, uric crystals can accumulate in the joints, causing swelling, inflammation, and severe pain.

During Tet, people with gout always need to choose the right foods to control gout pain.

The three main causes of gout are increased production of endogenous uric acid; decreased excretion of uric acid in the kidneys; and eating too many foods high in purines such as red meat and seafood.

According to experts from the Institute of Nutrition, in order to achieve better results in treating gout, in addition to following the treatment regimen and maintaining exercise, it is necessary to have a reasonable diet. During the holidays, it is even more important to pay attention to food choices to prevent the appearance of gout attacks.

Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, National Institute of Nutrition, noted that gout patients should avoid fast-growing green vegetables such as asparagus, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, bean sprouts, elephant ear... because they increase the rate of uric acid synthesis in the blood. At the same time, alcohol should be avoided because alcohol increases the production of uric acid in the liver and prevents the kidneys from excreting uric acid.

In addition, foods and drinks high in purines such as red meat, lamb and pork; offal such as liver, kidney, brain, intestines, etc.; seafood, especially shellfish such as shrimp, mussels, anchovies and sardines, increase the risk of acute gout attacks. Therefore, these foods should be avoided.

Fruits that are low in sugar can be used by people with high uric acid.

Diet to reduce uric acid

Dr. Hoang Trung Dung (Mortar and Bone Center, Bach Mai Hospital) added that to avoid pain during the Tet holiday, gout patients should not neglect their diet to help reduce uric acid levels in the body, because uric acid is the main cause of gout attacks. You should eat white meats: chicken breast, pork, river fish, eggs... because white meat usually has less purine. The amount of protein needed by the body each day is 50 - 100 grams.

According to Dr. Dung, starch and carbohydrate-rich foods are essential foods for gout patients because they contain a safe amount of purine. They have the function of reducing and dissolving uric acid in urine. Therefore, patients can eat noodles, pho, vermicelli, potatoes, bread, cereals, rice, and chia seeds.

People with gout should eat fruits and vegetables that do not contain much sugar such as: apples, oranges, cherries, strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers; fresh vegetables: kale, celery, cauliflower... These foods help eliminate uric acid from the blood.

"Green vegetables, broccoli and spinach are fiber-rich foods recommended for gout patients because they can reduce protein absorption, thereby reducing the formation of uric acid. You should eat more alkaline foods such as kale, radishes and squash because they help neutralize uric acid in the blood, slowing the progression of the disease," Dr. Dung added.

"You should drink plenty of water every day, on average about 2 - 2.5 liters/day depending on weight, gender, age... to increase uric acid excretion", the bone and joint disease expert also emphasized the role of water for people with gout.
